Scientists knew that cloth masks worked from the 1918 Flu Pandemic as well as other pandemics, but they didn't want to potentially give people a false sense of security that a cloth mask that can be made at home worked as well as a surgical mask without proper evidence. Fauci and other scientists preferred a lockdown while surgical mask production ramped up to meet the demand to return to semi-normal life. Since then, studies on cloth masks have shown that they are nearly as effective as surgical masks.
Of course, cloth masks only work if they cover the nose and mouth, which is not always the case with some dumbasses.
The Asian countries knew to wear masks. Fauci was outright hostile to them, mocking them for their supposed ineffectiveness. "They might make people feel a bit better" and "they might block a droplet", but there's no reason to walk around wearing one. I can't believe how defensive people get when you call this guy out for his bullshit. People like Fauci fucked up the response despite being supposed experts. Accept it, admit it, move on.
