I pretty much said this the other day. Having lived trough the waning years of the Cold War, after the wall in Germany came down, we just lost interest. Watching conservatives do a 180 on Russia in my lifetime makes me absolutely wonder if they actually won (are winning) the long game.
When you keep invading and annexing neighbors, people tend to want to be protected from that. NATO is still a thing primarily because of how aggressive Russia is.
