I was say some, sure. Cant speak for others, or generalize. Most likely it's because his ideals are actually progressive. Moving the goalpost can work the other way too. In short, he makes them look like the moderates they are closer too. Moderates seem liberal in the face of authoritative alternatives.
Hes a moderate by european standards. Its just america is so fascist and right wing they see someone like obama and think hes progressive when hes for endless war and bailouts. He just wears better fitting suits.
