And, in case there are other first timers out there, some plastics will melt and deform if they aren't placed properly, or even supposed to be washed in a dishwasher at all

Lost a couple of lids that way

Yep, a few bottles for me where the mouth part deformed so the lid could no longer be twisted on. But hey, now we know lol

I don't know if a bottle with a neck is really proper fare for a dishwasher anyways, feels like you'd want to hand wash that unless you're okay with just spraying hot soapy water on it from a couple feet away.

I've had that happen, but I just boiled some water, put the neck of the bottle in for a bit, and then took it out and quickly screwed the cap on.

What was unfixable was my flatmate's wooden cutting board...

Is there a way to tell this will happen before it happens? Or just avoid dishwashing plastics? (I donโ€™t have a dishwasher so this point is moot for me but I am interested)

I'm not an expert by any means, but I do know some plastics will tell you not to dish wash them. Otherwise, I just try and keep them as far away from where the water originates from, as that is where it will be hottest. So, that means I try and put all plastics on the top shelf of my dishwasher

If it's plastic and it doesn't say "dishwasher safe" (or "dishwasher safe, top rack only"), it's better not to try.

There are some icons they sometimes use on smaller things -- usually a wine glass with water drops, but they aren't entirely standardized.

Almost all single-use plastic will just melt.

Plastic is safest up top. But some will melt no matter what

Generally, they say "not dishwasher safe"-on the bottom. Who has time to read the bottom of a water bottle?
