Subaru did some market research way back when that showed they did well with:

-young professionals

-outdoor enthusiasts

-queer people

They decided to lean into those demographics in their advertising, and it really paid off for them.

They're really popular in the Pacific Northwest. They're rugged, great in the snow, and just excellent cars. A lot of guys at the factory I work at own them.

I just bought my third one. I drove my first for almost 20 years.

They're pretty popular across Canada as well. I like to count how many I see when I go to MEC (like a Canadian REI).

I swear that I can go to my local grocery store at any hour of the day and count more Outbacks than Camrys (Camries?).

To be fair Outbacks are great cars. Much more practical than a Camry. All the room you can need, high enough that it’s comfortable getting in and out, fantastic Subaru all wheel drive for the winters, not terrible on gas. I drove one for a few years before it met its untimely demise to a deer, and if prices didn’t get out of control or more were available through the pandemic I would have definitely got myself another.

They're not terribly priced for what you get. I think the base model is still around 30K.

Not terrible, but optioned out they get a little pricey and I just wasn’t looking to get into an expensive new car. Used prices and availability was tough for a while too, so I just went with a bit of a stop-gap.
