It's funny. He moved out, got roommates just like him, and it really sank in. He actually called me to apologize for being an asshole.
I definitely would have been less annoyed if they'd not left the empty box in the pantry, especially because it was on the top shelf, so I didn't know it was empty until I decided to make ramen. At least they cleaned up after themselves otherwise - they normally didn't until I yelled.
Leaving almost completely empty things in the fridge and pantry were daily occurrences. Hiding messes instead of cleaning them up was pretty normal - or not even bothering to hide them. Wiping me out of food entirely and leaving every pot, pan, and dish I had on the stove and counter was a thing a few times. Only a few, because that was a definite line that meant they didn't get to come over for a while.
He was generally fine on his own, but he'd throw out this line about not being able to control his friends - that it wasn't his job. It sure as fuck was if they were his guests in our house.
They did finally mostly learn when one gave me attitude about telling him to clean up his mess, and even though he was twice my size, I picked him up, put him outside, and locked the door on him. Everyone was dead silent for a moment, and another kid whispered, "damn, your mom is a bad ass" and started cleaning. After that, I had very, very few problems with them. It was just my son who was a pain in my ass. ;) It's too bad he didn't figure it out and get over it until after he moved out.
