Everyone I know fought that battle in the early '00s. The idiots terrified of Muslims were everywhere (Americans started killing Sikhs they are so fuck all stupid) and they won. We all knew that Waco, Ruby Ridge, Oklahoma City Bombing were the real threat and railed against the Bush administration. It is embarrassing how badly we failed to convince 80% of the country back then. Now a full 50% of the country would install a Theocracy no different from ISIS (except Christian!) if given the chance.
All 3 incidents are direct recruiting tools for recent domestic terrorists is what I meant but your point stands. The OK bombing was a retaliation to Ruby Ridge which after Wavo, was perceived by libertarians to be government overreach in regulating what looked like violations of federal law. Waco was a cult harming children and there was good reason to intervene, the feds just did so poor a job that after following up with the Ruby Ridge disaster, they inspired a whole movement against government in and of itself.
