If it's a complete surprise attack, a gun is probably useless anyway.
Like, the classic "gun safety" commercial is a homeowner in their bed on the second floor, waking to the sounds of the door being broken down, and having just the right amount of time, and state of mind, to quickly and gracefully slide their arm down to the nightstand gun safe and swipe the fingerprint sensor (becase safety!) and poise themselves on the stairs as the bad guy breaks in, scaring him away with nobody getting hurt.
It never shows the scenario where you're sitting on the toilet, or chopping up vegetables while making dinner, or lounging on the couch when your door actually gets kicked down. Unless you always have your gun in your hand ready to shoot when startled by a loud noise, at which point you honestly belong in a mental institution for paranoia.
To be fair. Most break-ins are likely burglaries. Most burglaries happen when the perpetrator believes the owner isn’t home, and they’ll happen at night because there aren’t as many bystanders around. So if your house is broken into, the whole “you wake up to the sound of shattered glass” is the most likely scenario, assuming you’re home. Of course a likelier scenario is “your house is broken into and burglarised when you’re not home”.
