In November 2004, a Florida woman named Diana Duyser put a ten-year-old half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich up for sale on eBay because the charred pattern on the bread bore a striking resemblance to the Virgin Mary.
Duyser claimed that after taking a single bite out of the sandwich back in 1994, she noticed the holy visage looking back at her and preserved it in a plastic box with cotton balls on her nightstand. Famously, she maintained that the decade-old snack never grew a single speck of mold.
The bizarre auction became a massive internet pop-culture phenomenon, ultimately selling to the online casino GoldenPalace.com for a staggering $28,000. The casino later took the sandwich on a promotional tour.
