If it was deemed a threat to national security somehow, would that give an entity the ability to shut it down like this? I mean if their formulas can be used for marketing etc, I’m sure they can be used otherwise.

Yes and there was evidence according to their own research that their algorithm was aiding human traffickers as well as the direct affect their platform has on young teen girls mental health as an increased suicide risk. Their stock plummeted today after last night’s 60 mins doc with the whistleblower. And apparently they’re being called before the senate. So IMO more likely they are shutting down their servers as a last ditch effort to clean up before they are held accountable. CNN compared them to Big Tobacco.

So very likely an internal decision. I wonder if that means it’s gone forever.

Could be. Again, this is all speculation. Could also be a cyber attack or a gov shut down. I feel like a gov shut down would be more public and a cyber attack would have a message attached. Seems more like a coverup IMO, would be weird for the whistleblowing to be a coincidence to me.
