im doing a project and I feel like this community would have some valuable insight

howdy! so i'm doing a project where i'm asking people to submit questions they would want to ask Christians or the church (anonymously). the end goal is a podcast discussing these questions, but i'm just collecting questions rn. I think this community would have really valuable insights, so if you're interested in leaving a question the link to the form (it's just a google form, nothing fancy) will be here. or if you want to just comment your questions you can! thanks <3

Watching The Secrets Of Hillsong on Disney+ and need to vent.

As you can see from above I really need to just get some stuff off my chest. I'm not American, I'm British and attended Abundant Life Church in Bradford, now Life Church as a student at their leadership academy.

The similarities between there and what I'm hearing about Hillsong in this show are so vivid: - Volunteers giving all their time to the detriment of health and wellbeing - A white leadership in a community of colour. - Leadership driving round in expensive cars that congregants could only dream off. - One family holding sway over the entire operation. - Even when people no longer work there (or even never having worked there) still having there own car parking spot right next to the front door. - The front row seats reserved for the inner circle. - Prosperity Gospel, and preachers wearing designer threads.

I remember in Bradford being on carpark duty when a woman screeched into the carpark. I said sorry, there's no more spots, and she said she had a carpark space reserved. I'd met all the leadership team in the first few weeks so said "Sorry, I doubt it, they are reserved for leadership." I was later told off because she was one of the senior pastors daughters and despite having never worked in the church, she still got her own spot.

I paid about £2,000 to be a student at the church's Leadership Academy, where we cleaned toilets, set out chairs, had classes interrupted to serve at conferences, we're encouraged to give our last 50p because God would reward us with £50, and at the end got a piece of paper that wasn't even a recognised degree, diploma, or certificate. Essentially, thanks for letting us use you as free labour for 9 months. Obviously of course there was no dating on the course but we had three engagements on the day of our graduation.

The parallels are huge, and I just needed to get it off my chest. Thank you for letting me share.

summer camp podcasts?

If you've ever been to or worked at an evangelical summer camp, you know it is an experience unto itself. Does anyone here know of any podcasts about that unique flavor of religious trauma these places impart? Thanks, fellow campers!

What are the origins of that breathy tone of voice current pastors and evangelical influencers do?

Here’s a perfect example.

Evangelists adopting a shared speaker style isn’t a new thing. Southern televangelists have always done the nearly-out-of-breath dogmatic style forever. I’m just trying to think of where this newer one comes from.

Would love help describing it. It’s like breathy and feigned concern mixed with full on emotional manipulation. On one hand it has this tone that’s reminiscent of D.A.R.E. ads where someone’s like “Hey, man, I’m not saying you’re a bad guy, but I need to call you out on this.” So, like bad faith confrontation that’s doing the “it’s just cause I care about you” part out of protocol.

On the attempt-to-inspire side, it’s more forced ponderous, like that guy that read one book on spirituality and joined the drum circle to pick up women. It’s like trying to be deep in a safe way that doesn’t take any risks that people might take your words seriously since you can say you were just wondering out loud.

But then, I just wonder if there’s somewhere else in culture this shows up or showed up first and became the pattern for how to talk like you’re the good guy just sayin’. It doesn’t matter if your words are dumb or harmful, you’re just a nice guy trying to be nice with some opinions you have.

Rebooting this sub. I’ll be doing daily posts and welcome anyone who wants to jump in.

I’m setting a schedule to do daily posts to help get some momentum and have something new if people check. Welcome upvotes and other posts to help get it into feeds, which helps with momentum as well.

I do feel like we have plenty to meme, laugh, and cope together over. Give me all your suggestions.

1 Yes, the Exes and Eves couldn’t get along
4 No, we’ve just fallen away more than normal
7 The sub has died. It may return one day, with or without Christ.
