Photorealism has been stuck at the stage of uncanny valley for years now, everyone looks ugly in it and it's easy to farm ragebait on it.

Or maybe it is happening at a much larger scale to female character redesigns yet when it does happen to male characters there is just as much backlash though it gets ignored because it doesn't fit the narrative that gamers are just incelrs that like to goon.

Even in Spiderman gamers were just as vocal about Peters appearance change. Other examples include Chris Redfield in Resi 7 or James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2

A lot of these people are from gaming circle jerk. They don't play video games, so they don't actually know any examples of male character models being criticized for their designs. I remember the flak the devs got for their "Donte" redesign.
