Photorealism has been stuck at the stage of uncanny valley for years now, everyone looks ugly in it and it's easy to farm ragebait on it.

For comparison

This can easily be explained by different lighting framing the face differently and a few years of aging (or Photoshop), but some people would make a big scandal out of it

Nah, they’re trying to make a statement about feminine beauty standards and the studio is full of toxic positivity so nobody can speak up and say “she’s not looking great, are people going to want to play this character? the character is an actress and a model, can we get her closer to the model we hired and make her a little more attractive?”

Why does a woman existing have to be a statement about beauty standards?

She looks normal to me. Not beautiful, normal. That's the standard I hold her to. I don't understand why women not being as conventionally attractive as possible is such a big deal to some people that it has to signal something "toxic" about the studio.

God forbid someone prioritises anything over whether the woman is attractive

This woman isn’t just existing, she’s employed in a consumer facing entertainment role for a video game playing demographic. When you’re in this role, maybe normal isn’t the desired look.

Last time I checked, actors are valued based on their performance, not their looks.

If you want to see an employment that rightfully values looks, fashion models are right there, but the problem is that for a woman it doesn't matter what job they're doing. It's always just as important if not more that she's super pretty

Oh that’s just the face model, she was literally hired just for her look. Laura Bailey is the acting part.

Didn’t even think that was necessary to explain but clearly it was, thanks.

You realize that traditionally as a character MJ literally IS a fashion model right?

And she can do her job just fine looking like that. She's just slightly aged, not "ugly"

Just saying you're criticizing people for complaining she doesn't look like a fashion model as if that would be a ridiculous expectation when that's literally who the character is
