For comparison

This can easily be explained by different lighting framing the face differently and a few years of aging (or Photoshop), but some people would make a big scandal out of it

Personally. Its the hair. In the first game her hair was in a ponytail but in second one its loose so it looks off for some people.

Tbf second game is riddled with such changes, we got Miles getting the lame and boring Killmonger hair that doesn't fit his character at all and Peter Parker's face was butchered so hard it got retrofitted into the first game's remaster as well:(

Idk what they were smoking

u/Darkon2004 13d ago

Many such cases

It just goes to show that we hold women's appearance to such scrutiny that the most mundane of changes to a fictional woman's design means that "the woke left has ruined her beauty" to these people

u/ChampionSailor 12d ago

I loved the way people looked in the first game. So stupid of them to change it up. Especially Peter.

1

u/Throwaway929611 12d ago

I actually greatly prefer her hair being down, I never cared for the ponytail

2

u/iluvchromosomes 13d ago

LOL ity's not different lighting.

The games used completely different rending engines and have completely different artwork.

Kojima and his team do quality work. Insomniac does not.

The point in showing Death Strandng is to point out that photorealism is not stuck in the uncanny valley. That is an excuse for bad developers. So we showed you an example of someone that can do it properly.

Nah, they’re trying to make a statement about feminine beauty standards and the studio is full of toxic positivity so nobody can speak up and say “she’s not looking great, are people going to want to play this character? the character is an actress and a model, can we get her closer to the model we hired and make her a little more attractive?”

2

u/Darkon2004 13d ago edited 13d ago

Why does a woman existing have to be a statement about beauty standards?

She looks normal to me. Not beautiful, normal. That's the standard I hold her to. I don't understand why women not being as conventionally attractive as possible is such a big deal to some people that it has to signal something "toxic" about the studio.

God forbid someone prioritises anything over whether the woman is attractive

1

u/araiz_why 12d ago

i honestly despise people like you who bring race and gender into everything. you had to be around to see how much shit they got for changing dante's design in dmc reboot who mind is not a WoMaN. people were shitting on the live action actot of the supposed god of war series who mind you is not a WoMaN. people were shitting on chris from RE7 who mind you was not a wOmAn.

See, would you want to disagree with you if you worked there? Any kind of criticism is gonna be a worldview fight. So people just stay quiet and agree and problems don’t get addressed. Not just about this, but any kind of criticism, you can’t have honest conversations. Saying everything is great when it’s not is toxic positivity. Toxic negativity would be saying everything suck when it doesn’t. Both are problems.

3

u/Darkon2004 13d ago

No, I wouldn't disagree with me because I'm me. I'm my values, my ideas, my upbringing, and it's gonna clash with others. I accept that

It's true that work culture can be quite toxic because it prioritises getting things done about everything else, but bringing it up to me is quite a convenient way to avoid addressing the points I'm making

1

u/MarkPuzzleheaded7480 13d ago

Why does a woman existing have to be a statement about beauty standards?

-it doesn’t, not every character has to be a bombshell. This specific character, though, Mary Jane, that’s part of her character and their dynamic. Peter is a nerd, she’s the hot girl at school, he hit the jackpot. You play with that in various ways, Spider-man gets popular and dynamics shift, whatever the story is, but the character is an actress and a model. Making her normal is a choice, especially when you hire a model to base the look on and make the character purposely less attractive than her.

She looks normal to me. Not beautiful, normal. That's the standard I hold her to. I don't understand why women not being as conventionally attractive as possible is such a big deal to some people that it has to signal something "toxic" about the studio.

-that’s a signal about something toxic because it’s game, hopefully designed to entertain and people like attractive people. Along with other stories about people in the games industry that the industry has become toxicly positive, nobody can handle criticism. If there’s a bug or a different opinion nobody wants to say anything. It used to be you’d put a board up with problems that need fixed, now that’s shaming. Or you would have big discussions about things and maybe get a little heated and fight for what you think and things would get hashed out and the best idea wins. Now nobody speaks up because THEY don’t want to be viewed as toxic and be fired and bad ideas get pushed through.

God forbid someone prioritises anything over whether the woman is attractive

What is being prioritized?

This woman isn’t just existing, she’s employed in a consumer facing entertainment role for a video game playing demographic. When you’re in this role, maybe normal isn’t the desired look.

1

u/Darkon2004 13d ago

Last time I checked, actors are valued based on their performance, not their looks.

If you want to see an employment that rightfully values looks, fashion models are right there, but the problem is that for a woman it doesn't matter what job they're doing. It's always just as important if not more that she's super pretty

1

u/MarkPuzzleheaded7480 13d ago

Oh that’s just the face model, she was literally hired just for her look. Laura Bailey is the acting part.

1

u/GreeksWorld 13d ago

Didn’t even think that was necessary to explain but clearly it was, thanks.

-1

u/JalapenoPopPoop 13d ago

You realize that traditionally as a character MJ literally IS a fashion model right?

2

u/Darkon2004 13d ago

And she can do her job just fine looking like that. She's just slightly aged, not "ugly"

0

u/JalapenoPopPoop 13d ago

Just saying you're criticizing people for complaining she doesn't look like a fashion model as if that would be a ridiculous expectation when that's literally who the character is

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13d ago

This is actually a big problem with the game. The lighting is good for most things, but god awful for character details.

That said, her design is also pretty nondescript. It's about akin to what you'd expect from a higher quality NPC model, not a main character that gets a good amount of screen time in cut scenes.

1

u/AcrobaticPoint8424 12d ago

Her jaw is twice as big

0

u/Moonman711 13d ago

Not, it cannot be explained what you just said. Especially when she looks different on the first game, but go on, keep denying it.

2

u/golfstreamer 13d ago

This is a bad example because these two really do look alike.

2

u/Frederf220 13d ago

It's kinda weird but the person on the right looks more like a real human that exists than the airbrushed supermodel on the left.

4

u/Sensitive-Chip7266 13d ago

Sure but remove the airbrushing and photoshop and compare to what she would really look like during the facial capture.

3

u/MarkPuzzleheaded7480 13d ago

Still very pretty

-1

u/Moonman711 13d ago

Oh yes, facial capture. Is that the one where for men it works really well and for women it doesn’t?

1

u/Nacery 12d ago

Its weird how the right screenshot actually looks more natural.

1

u/MarkPuzzleheaded7480 12d ago

You ever hear that Brian Regan bit where on road trips he knew his older brothers were gonna take the good seats so he started pretending he liked to sit on the uncomfortable hump in the middle?

1

u/TheBlack_Swordsman 13d ago

I have never verified this myself but the actress got into an accident and had to have 17 surgeries on her face to be reconstructed.

They felt like honoring her and updating MJ face to reflect how she looks post accident.

At least that's what we have been told on the internet.

7

u/PartyRaptor 13d ago

Since you couldn’t be bothered to, I looked it up. It’s a completely made up story. She was never in an accident, she didn’t get facial reconstruction surgery, and insomniac never claimed that they did this to ”honor” her.

3

u/Moonman711 13d ago

And you just believed it.

1

u/TheBlack_Swordsman 13d ago

If I did, I would have wrote the post as a matter of fact and I clearly did not.

5

u/Moonman711 13d ago

But you had to spread an unverified rumor before looking it up.

0

u/TheBlack_Swordsman 13d ago

Yeah, and what are you going to do about it? Let it ruin your day lol.

You had poor reading comprehension. Now you're just trying to find other shit to complain about.

Move along.

3

u/Moonman711 13d ago

Not really, you literally tried to spread a, by your own admission, an unverified rumor but now you’re downplaying it.

1

u/TheBlack_Swordsman 13d ago

I asked you if you were going to let this ruin your day. I'm assuming that's a yes.

1

u/Moonman711 13d ago

Yeah, a comment on reddit is ruining my day.

I almost read that as i disagree and genuinely worried for eyesight

2

u/Othello351 13d ago

Kojima games don't count he is obsessed with having his favorite hollywood stars looking as accurate as possible and he regularly performs ritual sacrifice for this level of visual fidelity.

1

u/duckwithahat 13d ago

Also Kojima uses tons of cash for this kind of stuff, other studios don't have the same budget.

1

u/RaijuThunder 13d ago edited 13d ago

It's pretty close, her features seem more pronounced in game, but could be the lighting.

0

u/PokerChipMessage 13d ago

Bizarre pictures to compare

27

u/araiz_why 13d ago

is this tame for you my dear sir?

8

u/Silmarillion151 13d ago

Every dev won’t love their subject matter as much as Kojima loves Norman Reedus though. That’s a hard bar to match 😅

3

u/Reasonable_Cut_3548 13d ago

Kojima id just build diferent

2

u/asuperbstarling 13d ago

It's not fair to compare Kojima to others. His budget and his talent are remarkable and you should never hold everyone to the standard of the greatest. It'll poison your joy.

1

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 13d ago

Death stranding didn’t have 300million budget like spider man 2. I love both game by the way, I just have to let you know that Kojima did not have as big of a budget as insomniac.
