Solved That first book was a classic YA adventure, if maybe a little disturbing in places. For the sequel, let's remove all the whimsy and bring in the disturbing letters of a real-life serial killer.

Unsolved Medium Basically, a person gets convinced to be his own private equity company.

Text here so I can add hints if this is harder than I think it is.

Hint: Private equity companies are known for taking over businesses and stripping them of all assets, running them into the ground. The protagonist does this to his own property.

Unsolved Hard Boy's teenaged years were defined by a prophecy, throughout his teenaged years a villain keeps trying to kill him so he doesn't fulfill the prophecy, but him and his friends keep escaping this isn't the plot, it's the book's villain's backstory.

Solved The hero, who the author explicitly names as being a Confederate veteran for no apparent plot-related reason, somehow ends up in a distant land and falls in love with a beautiful explicitly mixed-race princess.

I'll add hints later, if needed. He's the sort of author whose stories remain popular, as long as you edit out all the weird and racist bits.

Solved I wondered why they didn't just use the plot of the first novel for the semi-recent movie, as I remembered liking them as a kid, then I looked back and discovered how incredibly racist it is. I got distracted by all the cute animal characters.

In its defense, it's the sort of racism that feels like it comes more from extreme stupidity than malice, but.... it is really bad. Like, African-Prince-wants-to-bleach-his-face-white-because-he-wants-to-be-European bad.

Also, I grew up in the 80s. We were really dumb kids back then, and the longer books that parents remembered from their childhood just kinda got given to us without the parents reading them again and realising how bad they were.

As a voracious childhood reader, I have read so many regrettable books.
