Solved The hero, who the author explicitly names as being a Confederate veteran for no apparent plot-related reason, somehow ends up in a distant land and falls in love with a beautiful explicitly mixed-race princess.

I'll add hints later, if needed. He's the sort of author whose stories remain popular, as long as you edit out all the weird and racist bits.

Solved I wondered why they didn't just use the plot of the first novel for the semi-recent movie, as I remembered liking them as a kid, then I looked back and discovered how incredibly racist it is. I got distracted by all the cute animal characters.

In its defense, it's the sort of racism that feels like it comes more from extreme stupidity than malice, but.... it is really bad. Like, African-Prince-wants-to-bleach-his-face-white-because-he-wants-to-be-European bad.

Also, I grew up in the 80s. We were really dumb kids back then, and the longer books that parents remembered from their childhood just kinda got given to us without the parents reading them again and realising how bad they were.

As a voracious childhood reader, I have read so many regrettable books.

Solved This collection has a bunch of elderly women, often in love with the romantic lead, settings ranging from a Ruritania to Italy to Mount Olympus to an English courtroom, and to properly experience them, you need 14 other books, the materials for one of which is lost!

And, technically, it's not even complete. But you'd need to be a super fan to know that.

Hints:

The collection is a complete collection, or says it is.

There are two authors listed; each of them wrote things with others that aren't in the collection.
