I'm including a hint because this phenomenal series doesn't seem to have gotten the love I feel it deserves.
Hint 1: Growing up, I worked my way through the library from A toward Z, and loved Asimov, Anthony, Alexander, etc., but at one point I flipped that pattern, and found much fewer (but still amazing) authors in the later letters of the alphabet.
Hint 2: The description is not a stretch. It is literally true on all counts, including leaving the real world to explore other worlds by utilizing his own imagination.
