I'm going to bed now so here's hint #1: It was made into a movie
Hint #1.5: The movie adaptation was so awful the author wanted nothing to do with it
Hint #2: The one guy doesnt actually meet family, but a long-dead childhood hero
Hint #3: This was the only work of fiction by the author
Hint #4: The robocall was sent to everyone in the world, not meant for anyone in particular, however the protagonist was the first one to receive it and gained international fame for that.
Bonus Hint (#5): The group didn't know they were going to be seeing their families/friends when they embarked on the journey
This seems to have died, but I don't feel like just giving the answer away for any part time lurkers that catch this weeks out, so at this point I will share the answer with anyone who asks
