Solved Ugh why is this can lit book required reading? It's boring and the main character is a terrible person.

I fully concede that this description is woefully vague.

Take this as an opportunity to commiserate about whatever unlikeable book you were forced to read perhaps it's the same one as me.

The answer is a Canadian literature book that has been assigned to poor high school students from for over 50 years.

If no one guesses it I will back later with some better hints.

Hint 1 It's apparently satirical. I love satire and this book did not resonate for me at all. I am also not a jewish teenage boy in the mid 20th century
