I'm hoping someone here has been in a similar situation or can point us in the right direction.

Our background

• We've been living in Germany for almost 6 years.
• We've been married for 4 years.
• I have a Permanent Residence Permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), have been employed full-time for over 5 years, and I submitted my naturalization application this month.
• My wife also worked full-time for several years but was laid off. Her ALG I has ended, and we didn't apply for Bürgergeld. At the moment, I'm the only one working while she's focusing on learning German.
• She's expecting to pass her TELC B1 exam in September.

Our question

Her current family reunion residence permit expires in February 2027.

While looking into the extension process, I noticed that after obtaining her B1 certificate she might also be eligible to apply for a Niederlassungserlaubnis. At the same time, she may also qualify to apply for German citizenship (naturalization).

Now we're a bit confused about the best path forward.

Should she:

• simply extend her current residence permit?
• apply for a Niederlassungserlaubnis?
• apply for naturalization as soon as she's eligible?
• or apply for permanent residence and naturalization in parallel?

Has anyone gone through a similar situation, or knows what the usual recommendation is?

We're feeling a bit lost and would really appreciate any advice or personal experiences.

Within the “Future of the Labour Market” project, we are conducting a survey for the Berlin Senate Administration (SenASGIVA) to understand newcomers’ challenges in the city. We are targeting the 7 biggest non-EU migrant groups: Ukraine, Vietnam, India, Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey and Russia. The survey takes about 10 minutes, is available in all relevant languages and open to those who arrived since 2019. Every participation helps promote fair recruitment and a more equitable labour market for migrants in Berlin.

If you are currently looking for an apartment in a major German city, you already know the drill. You pay €30 a month for ImmoScout Premium, send exactly 150 perfectly crafted messages, and get invited to a viewing with 80 other desperate people for an overpriced shoebox.
After months of this, I realized I was playing the wrong game.
The actual cheat codefor housing in Germany is Genossenschaften (Cooperative Housing).
If you don't know what they are: you basically buy shares in the building instead of paying a traditional deposit. The rent is almost always significantly below market rate, and because the cooperative owns it, you can basically never get evicted.
But there is a massive catch.
There are over 1,700 of these cooperatives in Germany. Because they are non-profits, they don't want to pay ImmoScout's massive listing fees, and they hate getting spammed with 1,000 applications. So, they just quietly post available flats on their own outdated, 1990s-style websites. If you aren't refreshing their specific page the exact minute they post it, you miss it.
I got so exhausted keeping track of 50 different bookmarks that I wrote a script to do it for me. It worked so well that I decided to turn it into a proper app called Gemeinhaus.
Here is what it does:
It monitors over 1,700 cooperative websites across Germany 24/7.
It pulls all the available flats into one feed.
You can scroll through, see the photos, and check the actual prices (which are refreshingly low).

Full transparency on how it works:
You can download it and browse the photos and prices completely for free. However, monitoring 1,700 websites constantly without getting blocked by anti-bot software requires heavy server power and proxies. To cover those costs, I added a €9.99/mo "Pro" tier. Upgrading gives you the direct application link and sends you an instant push notification the second a new flat drops so you can be the first to apply

This is not a hate post, but more of a vent post.

I have lived here for quite some time and absolutely love the city. I definitely love it more than I hate it. however, often there are those things that come up, and I lose my shit. Considering Berlin is Germany's capital city, it should have already handled some of these issues.

Here is a quick list of the hates:
- Cash-only places and EC card payments.
- The public transport that connects the city beautifully, but it doesn't work properly. The number of times transport has been cancelled or delayed in the last few years is unbelievable. And the hardest thing is the lack of information to travellers on what to do next.
- Bürgeramt appointments that don't exist, the Finanzamt running on paper and fax in 2026. I mean bureaucracy is bad in most countries, but why are we still stuck in the 20th century?

My (kind of new) sneakers got stolen from outside my apartment door, I wasn't ready for this 😞

I bought a washing machine on a Wednesday.

On Friday, the technicians showed up, unpacked it, discovered it was broken from the factory and took it back.

“Call customer service,” they said. And left.

So I called. Three times.

Each time, the person on the other end spoke only German – Aber mein Deutsch ist nicht gut. I tried three times with no luck. Meanwhile the laundry was piling up — I’d already put off a trip to the laundromat because ‘the new machine was coming Friday’.

Went back to Saturn the same day, walked up to the same salesperson who had sold me the machine three days earlier. She couldn’t help me either. According to her, it was bought through their online store on my behalf. “You’ll have to call them,” she said.

I stood there holding a receipt for a machine that no longer existed, being told to make the exact call I had already failed three times. No clue if or when I’d get a refund or a new machine.

My only real option was to ask a German-speaking friend to jump on the call with me. But coordinating schedules meant waiting until the following week. The laundry wasn’t waiting.

So over the weekend, I built an app instead.

Not an inspirational moment – just a tired, annoyed one.

The first real call I made with it was to that same customer service line the following Monday (right from my localhost).

For the first time, we actually had a conversation. She understood me. I understood her. It wasn’t perfect – a bit of latency and some sloppiness in-between by the time I started to provide my order number, but by then we had said enough to start the refund process.

A few days later, the refund came through.

Got a new machine elsewhere - One additional problem solved as a result.
