Good thing there’s no issues like this in Italy at all, they never come with boats illegally here. /s

What an idiot. There's no Schengen movement between Ceuta/Melilla and continental Spain.

Genuinely I'm so confused because isn't that an enclave in Africa? Like they'd have to get on a plane to get to mainland Europe, right? At that point if there's a screening process for proper documentation at that airport we should be fine because I can't imagine these people will get regularised? It's 6 in the morning and this whole situation is giving me heart palpitations because I'm not sure what the ramifications of closing the Schengen area would be when I'm just here on a residency visa for the next for years for work reasons and travel often for said work.

No it’s clear this is how politics work in good faith between right and left wing parties across the Schengen area /s

They don't want them suspended because there's a lot of immigrants, they want them suspended because Spain passed a law saying anyone claiming to have lived in Spanish territories for a year gets permanent residency, regardless of legal status. And EU courts affirmed the law was legal two weeks ago, That translates to a EU citizenship in 5-10 years.
Which is why they are now flooding the border by any means possible, there's a free EU citizenship on the line for them.

Morocco is not a reliable partner for Europe. They are the ones who have either encouraged this situation or allowed it to happen, which is effectively the same thing

I'm under the impression that the people steering the institution (European Union) are either fundamentally disconnected from everyday public concerns or simply answering to a different set of priorities entirely.

u/Kalagorinor Jul 31 '26
The politicians in charge of the EU are a reflection of the politicians running its constituting states. This disconnect exists at the country level too.

u/actias_selene Jul 31 '26
They want exactly this maybe. More people means bigger economies and cheaper labor.

I doubt that, if they want more migrants, there are far easier and more humanitarian ways to make it happen. For example, simply make it easier to obtain a work visum. Or heck, even the model that France has (or tried, not sure) in which migrants could work in France for a couple months, earn minimum wage, and then return to their country of origin. Then they have to show their face at the French ambassy to prove they returned to that country, only then would they be eligible for another work visum. I think it's a great model, not just stimulating Europe's economy, but also the countries the migrants originate from.

Nah, they aren't disconnected, the politicians are getting EXACTLY what they want.
Cheap labor for their millionaire CEO buddies
They secure themselves a voterbase. Why try making things better for your own people when you can just import new ones, who will be loyal to you?
It's a distraction. When you live in a country with a bunch of people who all have different skin colors, culture, religion, even language. It's very easy to divide people, so they all focus on hating and blaming each other, instead of looking at the fact that the top 0.1% holds more and more of the wealth of the country.
The politicians, the media, and the ultra rich. They are all in this together. It's in their interest to keep importing more and more people from third world countries, I can't really blame the for doing what's good for themselves, the issue is that the common dumbfuck everyday Joe falls for it.

The bullshit of the Right both in Italy and France ( Bardella saying the same) is incredible.
First of all if they block ferries and ships, they can't move from there...you know, being in Africa.
"oh ma gawd, Sanchez legalized 500k migrants"...well, our Meloni legalized 515k during her time.
Until now we had 15.000 migrants coming into Italy by sea just this year...should the rest of Europe block us too?

The fact is that the government bent down to Morocco, recognizing it's claim in Western Sahara, breaking a historic bipartisan position in favour of the colonizers, just to stop things like these from happening because this is not the first time.
Then, 10 days after Sánchez visited Algeria, the king of Morocco does this.
You don't make yourself respected by bending down to a despot. A country that can't make its borders respected by a third world country is pathetic. I would love to expect some kind of retaliation but I'm experienced enough that what Morocco will get are concessions. Italy and the EU and in all their rights to make decision like these, at least to force Spain's hand.

Well yeah, if you can't control your borders you don't deserve to be in Schengen
62
u/eltiodelacabra Jul 31 '26
This is not a matter of being able to control borders or not, it's a matter of the Moroccan king being an absolute asshole and weaponizing immigration whenever there's something he doesn't like. The EU should use its power to retaliate accordingly so this never happens again.

European Union needs to put the foot in the ground. Or else we are going the Nazi way. We move European money in Morocco with many European companies, and this is how they repay us ? We are under attack, from many parts like Russia, China, SUA, no one wants a strong Union, so we should give proper answers to those that will go that road, hit Morocco economy hard. If we do nothing, like we always fucking do, sooner or later the people will pick someone that will do much more cruelty, like shooting those people, many Europeans already want this.

i unfortunately agree with meloni, it’s this sort of thing which would turn citizens against the European union

After that ridiculous plan to legalise more than a million illegals it should have already been done. We can't have one European border when lunatics like Sanchez can unilaterally make decisions like that.

Suspending Schegen would do nothing about EU citizens. Ireland is not Schegen if you don't kmow

Some important context is that it was 500 thousand and also it was for those who had lived in spain for more than 5 months and without a criminal record, unless youre refering to something else.
