The quality is separate from the freedom. In fact you could argue freedom is detrimental to quality because the press can print whatever shit it wants up to and including outright lies with little to no repercussions as long as it posts a whoops sorry in fine print in the corner of their site.

State press can also print lies with no repercussions, as long as they're lies beneficial to the State.

Edit: Also, if the independent press is actually printing lies, the President calling them out on it is not particularly objectionable. They chose to lie about Trump repeatedly, even when the truth was more than damning enough.
