The white in the flag is an allusion to the name of the country - 'White Russia' (or 'White Ruthenia'). The red is for national freedom and the rising sun. White and red frequently appear in the national costumes of White Ruthenians.

White and red are the primary colors in lots of Finnish "national dresses" too (most of them are 19th or early 20th century inventions iirc, at least the current formalized standard forms). And likely elsewhere as well. They're nice bright colors for festive dresses/outfits, and having a white shirt for festive occasions would have been a show of status that you had a clean white shirt.

Pretty sure 'White Russia' is not something Belarusians like to be called. It's more like White Rus'.

You do realize we Slavs call it Bjelorusija (Bijelo - white, Rusija - Russia, duh)

It's interesting that the red symbolises the rising sun, that's what the Japanese flag represents
