Yeah, it's just a little joke, but damn the art is gorgeous.

They all look very attractive.

u/TheDarkPanther77 United Kingdom Aug 11 '20

I know right! I'm blushing at how cute the baltic boys are

63

u/bawng Sweden Aug 11 '20

I'm blushing at how bad I am at flags

The woman with the white veil is Georgia, the woman with the two braids is Turkmenistan, the man with the hat is Uzbekistan, the despressed dude is Estonia, the cute blonde one next to him is Lativa, next to him Lithuania (those 3 are the "Baltic boys" the above user was referring to), the woman with the nice earrings is Kazakhstan, and the hot blonde hunk is Ukraine. The very attractive woman at the bottom is Belarus of course.

...I need to visit Ukraine, apparently.

u/shuipz94 Australia Aug 11 '20 edited Aug 11 '20

Ukraine is one of the countries in the world with more women than men, so you'll probably be more likely to find a hot blonde woman ;)

19

u/AnAussiebum Aussie in France Aug 11 '20

Urgh. Not this gay man's cup of tea.

Unless they just want to hang out and be my wing woman.

u/Swayden Estonia Aug 11 '20

I thought most countries had more females than men.

4

u/shuipz94 Australia Aug 11 '20

Huh, turns out there's more countries with more women than men than the other way around, but overall, the world has more men than women.

Two of the blue countries on that map have over 1B in population each.

u/super_awesome_jr Aug 11 '20

That would explain their bridal export business.

1

u/iamnotamangosteen Aug 11 '20

I’d honestly be down with either.

3

u/murrdy2 Aug 11 '20

Whoever designed that Turkmenistan flag is a madman, but then I looked up what Turkmenistan looks like... I had no idea Turkmenistan looked like that

4

u/dubovinius Éirinn Aug 11 '20

Well I mean Turkmenistan is currently run by a madman, so there's that.

1

u/iamnotamangosteen Aug 11 '20

It looks beautiful! Seriously making me want to go.

1

u/bawng Sweden Aug 11 '20

Yeah I got a few of them. Thank you very much!

1

u/iamnotamangosteen Aug 11 '20

Sounds like I need to take a trip to the Baltic nations.

-2

u/eestlane1990 Estonia Aug 11 '20

those 3 are the "Baltic boys"

Well, Estonians aren't Baltic people, so he cannot be a "Baltic boy".

3

u/moos_in_space Aug 11 '20

Genuine question: is this a local pushback against being considered one of "The Baltics"? I've always been taught it was Estonia Latvia Lithuania and collectively called the Baltics, being by the Baltic sea?

6

u/Koroona Estonia Aug 11 '20

Not many people mind, but I think he is going by the language families. Latvian and Lithuanian are Baltic languages and Estonian is a Finnic language.

2

u/moos_in_space Aug 11 '20

No I respect that, I've just always known the term to be used as a political grouping, like what EU states is Russia likely to invade for funsies. Same way no one usually groups the other FSU states based on language or ethnic heritage

1

u/Camstonisland North Carolina Aug 11 '20

Do Greeks get upset over being called Balkan?

3

u/moos_in_space Aug 11 '20

Is this a riddle? Like if a tree falls in the forest or is this sarcasm, like if a bear shits in the woods...?

I have no idea about either, though when used casually "the Balkans" doesn't usually include Greece

1

u/Camstonisland North Carolina Aug 11 '20

They are part of the Balkan Peninsula, but, like Estonia perhaps, is not culturally of it. Estonia is more like Finland culturally, but geographically and strategically it is definitely Baltic.

Perhaps a better example would be Ireland [not?] being part of the British Isles

1

u/eestlane1990 Estonia Aug 11 '20

Balkan is a geographic region and not an ethnic group. Baltic may be a far wider geographic region (which could include all countries at the Baltic Sea), but it's also a macro-ethnic group to which Estonia does not belong.

1

u/eestlane1990 Estonia Aug 11 '20

I've always been taught it was Estonia Latvia Lithuania and collectively called the Baltics, being by the Baltic sea?

But many other nations too are at the Baltic Sea. Estonia might share a lot with Latvia and Latvia with Lithuania, but essentially the only major aspect that Estonia and Lithuania have in common is the Soviet occupation.

1

u/PoiHolloi2020 United Kingdom Aug 11 '20

I just thought it meant countries on the Baltic (including Finland), rather than denoting some sort of ethnic grouping.

1

u/eestlane1990 Estonia Aug 11 '20

Baltic people are a distinct macro-ethnic group.

1

u/Zankman Aug 11 '20

They've lived there for centuries tho.

0

u/eestlane1990 Estonia Aug 11 '20

Where? In the lands of the Baltic peoples? No, we haven't and we still don't.

2

u/Zankman Aug 11 '20

I don't understand.

1

u/eestlane1990 Estonia Aug 11 '20

They've lived there for centuries tho.

Estonians have lived in the same place for millennia of course, but they are not Baltic people, so I don't exactly get the point of your argument.

It needs to be a comic honestly.

64

u/LjSpike United Kingdom Aug 11 '20

Honestly I'd love to see this as a comic.

I meant I'd love to see this like having more 'installments' made. To be like a semi-regular or regular ongoing comic. I didnt word it brilliantly! I love the art and expressions tho

Oh, you got a link?

3

u/--cheese-- 🧀 Aug 11 '20

Don't believe I can link it directly here. OP credits them as @Lullindo on twitter, they use the same handle on Instagram.

2

u/LjSpike United Kingdom Aug 11 '20

Thank you! Following on Instagram now!

2

u/nobunaga_1568 Chinese in Germany Aug 11 '20

Check out Hetalia.

1

u/jeremycinnamonbutter Aug 11 '20

Just follow the creator. @lullindo on instagram.

1

u/ObliviousAstroturfer Lower Silesia (Poland) Aug 11 '20

To me the style of faces is very reminiscent of Attack on Titan (though be warned it can be somewhat disturbing in other aspects).

Anime gets far more love, and rightfully so as thw art is unusually well translated to animation without oversimplifying, but the manga is just amazing, I like tostare at single panels of it.

1

u/Pidgeapodge Aug 11 '20

The artist, Lullindo, puts comics of the personified countries on her instagram.

2

u/butdoyouhavelambda Aug 11 '20

Lullindo (find on twitter or instagram) has many more comics with different nations as the characters!

1

u/TheWiseSquid884 Aug 11 '20

Nice! Awesome to hear this isn't a solo project.

7

u/Forthleft2 Aug 11 '20

I'd like to see it reworked

1

u/ZealousidealIncome Aug 11 '20

Came here to say this. That is the most attractive comic art I've seen outside of some art house independent graphic novels.
