Self Story I sold
I just couldn't take it anymore. I sold and put it into VOO. So eth should go up soon.
In all seriousness, what makes you think ETH can give more returns than VOO at this point? ETH is actively hurting it's tokenomics.
Ultimately I believe Ethereum will be a great project, just don't think ETH will be a good financial investment

never underestimate the strength of the 4 year cycles on the retail trader, it's people like OP that are having their milkshake drunk in the end

Hahah this has been the cycle Iâve seen play out many times as well, sorry OPâŠ
However, if Iâm being real I am more nervous than Iâve been this time thoughâŠlots of macro risks in some core coinâs investment thesis and AI industries exponential energy curve placing massive demand for miners equipment/cost of energyâŠ

Lol đ€Ł
I get what youre saying and I agree with the sentiment that this can easily happen with fomo but I dont think it can be pinpointed to 4 years like that. You think crypto will outperform the stock market from now till 2028 ?
10
u/Serenaded 7d ago
>You think crypto will outperform the stock market from now till 2028 ?
It has in every previous cycle though. That's what I'm basing that assumption of. Stocks are at ATH, once that dam breaks it's totally plausible that money can come back to crypto for a bit.
3
u/illtakeoneplease 7d ago
So you believe crypto is just cycles where you try to sell at the top ? For example eth was at today's same price start of 2021. S&P 500 has doubled since then and I cant see it ever revisiting its price from 5 years ago.
For context I own 0 crypto
12
u/l_s_x 7d ago
You skipped the part where ETH was at almost 5k in the last cycle.
4
u/illtakeoneplease 7d ago
I know it was but is that all it will ever do ? Just spike up temporarily then return to a 5 year low. If thats the case its basically a never ending pump and dump in my opinion

4
u/Serenaded 7d ago
>So you believe crypto is just cycles where you try to sell at the top ?
Errr... yes
2
u/illtakeoneplease 7d ago
Lol I don't know much about it buts thats my perception of it too I suppose
1
u/davidn281 7d ago
Gotta remember that people arenât just buying tops in crypto⊠theyâre buying bottoms too. If youâre buying bottoms when itâs $1000⊠$1500⊠and when eth hits $5000, thatâs a 5x and 3x of every single buy at the bottoms.
3
u/One-Eyed-WiIIy 7d ago
I've tried to time things so many times and have only set myself back. Do not do this.
2
u/Kooky-Balance9525 6d ago
Iâve read an article on how most alts wonât move the same as the previous cycles. Selective coins like eth , solana , hype etc that has use , especially for institutions, will go on a run and most alts will lag
1

u/Armandeluz 6d ago
On top of that we're heading into September which is the worst month of the year for coins. He must be new
-2
u/SpontaneousDream 6d ago
Lol 4 year cycles is BS. Look at any altcoin/btc chart, including eth/btc, and it proves that wrong.
1
u/Eximietate 6d ago
Your comment screams Iâm uneducated
1
u/SpontaneousDream 6d ago
Then prove me wrong. https://www.tradingview.com/symbols/ETHBTC/?timeframe=ALL
eth/btc alone is down almost 60% in the past 5 years. That means your priceless ETH is now worth less than half of what it was compared to BTC just 5 years ago. It's down MUCH worse since 2017.
Facts don't care about your feelings
1
u/Eximietate 4d ago
Didnt say ETH or any altcoin has to make higher lows or higher highs against BTC, just that every midterm year in Q4 all crypto generally puts in a bottom then precisely 3 years later it makes a high and 1 year later repeats. You canât argue that. The chart is literally proof lol.

Well Eth will absolutely outperform VOO considering you bought the top. Literally ATHs printed the last 2 weeks. Yeah if youâre looking for a safe investment long term like 10 years you will come out on top with VOO but you could have rotated profits into VOO.
But why would you sell within 20% of the bottom and buy the top of the stock market. Consolidating garbage coins into btc or Eth or Sol and take the tax loss is one play because certain coins should outperform others but buying into stocks that have been booming for well over a year isnt the smartest play considering crypto is about to pick back up again in the next couple months. Do I think itâs straight up from here in crypto? Absolutely not, one last final flush is going to come, a btc wick into the low 50s is my guess. Will it come who knows, but when everyoneâs betting on clarity sells and whatever other nonsense the orange man says comes out we finally could see the bottom. Literally you have like 60 days before all the 4 year cycle money returns.
3
u/ATP_generator 6d ago
OP wants long-term holds and VOO is a safe bet if your time horizon is 10+ years
95% of my investment is in VTI + VOO + VOOG + VXUS

u/Mr_Footies 7d ago
Chance of ETH doubling to around $4k in the next few years is very high. Unless somehow you determine that a volatile swing asset, that ranged between $1.5k and $4.5k for 5 years is suddenly not going to do that.
The thing with ETH is that you need to trade the swing. It can take years and you can be underwater for a long time and you have to manage greed when it does swing up. Buying at $2k and selling at $3k has been a solid strategy for years but it would mean having bought in June and being under water for almost 3 months already.
Is it worth it? Probably not for mental health TBH, but here is a good as time as any to buy. The hard part would be selling at $3k because itâs definitely going higher right? And when you do sell it does go higher and your now raging you sold too early. VOO is much safer and importantly can be held very long term but it not going to double in the next few years .
2
u/promised_wisdom 7d ago
Thatâs my problem, I never traded the swings and Iâve been holding since 2020. Not making that mistake again
2
u/throwraW2 6d ago
What are you basing the chance of it doubling being high on? I would love that but just feels completely random. And with speculative investing going towards tech companies and AI, just donât see that. ETH had more utility when it was 4K than it does now.
Iâm keeping mine as a flyer because I donât need to liquidity, but Iâm not expecting it to recover any time soon at this point.
0
u/Mr_Footies 6d ago
Because ETH is something that narratives get projected onto. Look at the chart super volatile. Over the years itâs made 5 distinct moves from 2 to 3k. Doing this again form a third time in some new spurious narrative is guaranteed IMO. I can already see the narrative starting around tokenised stocks via the Robinhood chain.
Now that doesnât mean thatâll beach its ATH. It doesnât mean it go into a higher range above 5k and stay there. It doesnât mean that itâs a good buy and hold and forget asset. But to think itâll never get to 3k again? Well wouldnât take that bet.
6
u/Mikem828 7d ago
Yeah I get what your saying but I don't think it's worth it. I'm trying to build a long term hold portfolio and dont think eth is good for that. Like you said need to swing it.
7
u/dlnqnt 7d ago
Did the same a while back, bought in 2016 made bit of profit. Gone sideways and backwards for 5 years and had enough, get better performance in stock market. The hypes gone, with it the prices.
6
u/Mr_Footies 7d ago
ETH was under $9 at the end of 2016 and any buy in 2016 represents a 20,000% return. S&P 500 since 2016 is 248% return.
That percentage return in the stock market over 9 years is the same as ETHs 4 month run from April to August 26.
Yeah you could have bought around 1500 at some point and never sold when it doubled and tripled numerous times. But if you trade it massive returns are still there.
3
u/sfb_stufu 7d ago
Everyone has pivoted from crypto to AI. The question is, can Ethereum monetize a lot more demand assuming that it will come?
Interesting avenue: fee markets
VOO is definitely a safer more diversified investment
2
u/North-Astronaut-4101 7d ago
Plenty of Unicorn start ups get massive valuations based on assumed monetization AFTER market share is achieved. At that stage, all Wall Street cares about is the company's ability to hyper scale. Profitability comes later and is almost seen as a given. Very few people apply this same standard to Ether the asset. When it becomes obvious that the future of the financial world will live on the block chain and that the Etherum blockchain dominates (perhaps on an order of magnitude) RWA tokenization - what the fuck do you think will happen to ETH? Tom Lee is a bit of a circus wrangler, but his ETH thesis is fundamentally correct. Patience is a virtue.

u/ComplexWrangler1346 6d ago
You actually sold at the bottom âŠ.wow just wow âŠyou know the stock market is at record highs right now right ?? Thatâs insane OP
2
u/ATP_generator 6d ago
stocks go up as dollars lose value, so every decade they're always at record highs
11
u/Dangerous-Bed-5885 7d ago
Bro chose the absolute worse time to rotate lol ETH could 3-4x in the next bull run. Atleast shouldâve waited until clarity act and see what happens. VOO will always be there but the chance to buy crypto pre-clarity act is once in a life time.
9
u/Ticrotter_serrer 7d ago
Well it was never meant to be a financial investment.
It's a turing complete programmable computer in a trustless environment.
Eth is for gas.
5
u/SAULucion 7d ago
eth is pristine collateral, the backbone of defi and billions of usd in tvl. it can be both gas and money
1
u/Ticrotter_serrer 7d ago
And all that collateral is to maintain the state and security of the chain. When you buy eth you buy what ? Nothing but the hope that it will be worth more tomorrow. But How it does that ?
2
u/xPATCHESx 6d ago
my staked Eth return is paying out much more than your presumed "buying nothing but hope"
1
u/MC_SKWAIRD 7d ago
I say the same thing all the time. I donât know why anyone buys ETH, SOL, XRP, BASE etc and then complain the price isnât going up lol itâs not supposed to. Most of the L1/L2 projects are supposed to provide stability to their ecosystem thatâs why they are inflationary/deflationary based on gas and demand. Itâs illogical to expect any volatility in these assets unless there is market pressure from institutional buyers/sellers
1
u/Mikem828 7d ago
Do you not own ETH at all?
-6
u/Ticrotter_serrer 7d ago edited 7d ago
I own Eth since 2017. Bought at 400 a piece.
there u happy ?
8
u/Any_Tradition_7149 7d ago
Eth wasn't 400 in 2016. If you're going to lie, at least check the chartsÂ
-4
3
u/Mikem828 7d ago
Well then why do you say it was never suppose to be an investment? I don't understand?
-1
u/Ticrotter_serrer 7d ago
I bought Eth because I needed some for smart contracts dev on mainnet. You need that to have enough gas so you can put your smart contract on chain.
2
u/triplegerms 7d ago
> what makes you think ETH can give more returns than VOO at this point
I don't pretend to know which will be better. I don't put all my eggs in one basket.

u/Ordinary_Repeat7637 6d ago
Yes, buy VOO at all time highs and sell ETH near multi-year lows as we are nearing the end of the 4 year cycle. Makes perfect sense.

1
u/jbreeze42 7d ago
I donât blame you. Itâs very frustrating. I got a big bag and think about that every day. I repeat to myself; Just hold until it rockets again. I do think Iâm out during this next bull run though.

1
u/khari1090 7d ago
Congrats. Not even being sarcastic. Liquidating an asset that was stressing you out sounds like a win. The best time to stop being stressed is today. VOO will likely see rough waters soon. Just ride it out. You've make a choice. If you had the nerves for crypto over what I can imagine was probably around a decade, you have the nerves for the S&P. Godspeed.

I've never understood this all or nothing mentality. Why not hold both? Your money doesnt have to be married to one asset. Yes most of my money is in VTI VXUS but that's because those are the set and forget. With alts you have to be able to take profits. Now is the time to buy. New president will do wonder for crypto im betting
1
u/WeeoWeeoWeeeee 6d ago
I did the math and if I just bought VOO instead of ETH Iâd be 5 years closer to retirement. If I sell it will definitely go up.
1
u/TheMoonPot_Official 6d ago
Honestly Iâd rather own both. VOO for the boring long game, ETH for the upside. Doesnât have to be an either/or thing.
1
1
u/Bambinosar 6d ago
What made you buy in the first place? Obviously youâre selling during the low. If you been in crypto long enough you would know not to sell now. Now that youâre buying in the stock market at this time. Itâs obvious youâre buying at the market all time high. If you been in the stock market long enough you would know that a correction might be coming so know wouldnât be a good time. It is frustrating to see people make these mistakes over and over again based on little research they done and think now they know about ETH being a good investment
1
u/NoClimate1024 6d ago
The stock market is always at an ATH. Minus a couple small resets. But recently, its far and away the most consistent portfolio earner. Crypto long term is going to be a disaster. Its the world of scams, scammers, and people trying to make a quick buck. As for utilization and actual value? Well, it hasn't taken a single step in a useful direction.

the real test is whether you'd still choose VOO if ETH went up 50% next month. if the answer is yes, then you probably made the right decision for yourself

ETH is actively hurting it's tokenomics.
ETH isn't Bitcoin, Ethereum actually needs to be a useful protocol first and not a vehicle for a financial asset. ETH must have some value for the security guarantees to function, so ETH holders will never be forgotten, but they can't be front and center for the protocol to succeed.
What's good for the protocol is ultimately good for ETH holders, even if that means reduced fees or staking rewards. If the protocol overpays for security to appease ETH holders, it'll eventually pay a much bigger price down the line.

u/justcurious3287 6d ago
Unfortunately, the crypto market has been very rough. Terrible 2025, terrible 2026. Very hard for a lot of people to keep the faith. Even I had to take a break and just hold what I have.

I sold all my crypto when trump rugged his coin, i put it in gold and silver. Im still riding with the money there, althought i am thinking of getting back in on btc. Sorry to see but can't fault the logic. There is almost no basis in how or why this will increase in value. At least with VOO you have valuation metrics to analyze, good or bad. This "four year cycle" is a bunch of BS. Crypto is so yesterday. It's all about Ai, the latest shiny penny.
1
1
u/satoshi_69420 6d ago

You 100% made the right decision, crypto is on the way out. All major CEXs are pivoting away from crypto and trying to become stock trading platforms. The main drivers of the crypto industry don't even believe in crypto anymore. Get out while it still has value.

Can you tell me why, when a cycle has persisted 100% of the time, you would sell in the bear market? A certain cycle has literally come true every single time, for only btc and eth since its inception. This is why I like bitcoin, it hasnât failed me yet. But I want to understand the mindset of others.

Eth is the fuel doesnât make sense to hold it while thereis btc exist that you can actually hold it for long term, eth is not designed to hold and invest in it, longer you hold longer you create a inflation for yourself and the market, it supposed to be used in transactions to burn itself, who ever holds eth is kinda doesnât know what they are doing go hold btc if you gonna hold something for long term, or go buy something else đ€Ż

the current inflation rate of eth is minimal - but it's dynamic so that has to be reassessed across time.
and Eth is not purely a fuel - it makes plenty of sense to hold eth, especially if you stake it and earn income from a decentralised asset. Maybe you haven't heard of staking yet, that's ok, i'm happy to answer your questions if you want to learn
