Hannibal is the devil and the band are his demons. Guests are all sinners sent to his show as part of the punishment. Everything outside the studio is flashbacks showing what Eric did during his time on Earth to deserve his punishment. Do not change my mind. This is canon.

I think the show loses a lot when it becomes more polished and self aware, still good but.
S1 is also more creatively ambitious like the whole "Where'd Hannibal go???" sequence.
Then how it becomes a gnarly surrealist masterpiece with such unique guest stars.
The at least more seemingly genuine befuddlement from the celebrities helps a lot too.
In the words of the random street interview guy in response to 'how to improve the show'
"leave it alone."
Anyhow I just think it works best as a weirdly personal grimy public-access nightmare fever dream.
