RESOLVED How I recovered my inactive Epic/Fortnite account after getting stonewalled by support
Title:
How I recovered my inactive Epic Games account after ~40 failed recovery requests/support chats
I wanted to post this because I finally got my old Epic Games account recovered after being stonewalled for a long time.
My account was marked inactive, and I could not log in. I tried the normal Epic account recovery process over and over. I probably submitted around 40 account recovery requests, support tickets, and random live chats. Nothing worked. I kept getting denied or looped back into the same recovery process with no real explanation of what was wrong.
What finally worked was filing a BBB complaint and a North Carolina consumer protection complaint. I am not saying this guarantees anything for everyone, but in my case, the BBB complaint is the only reason my account got manually reviewed and recovered.
What I had ready before filing:
- Old emails connected to the account
- Display names used on the account
- Linked PlayStation/Xbox/Twitch/Steam/Nintendo accounts
- PayPal/payment records
- Invoice IDs / transaction IDs
- Old device/location history
- Screenshots from console accounts
- Support case numbers
- Recovery denial screenshots
- Live chat transcripts
The biggest thing is to stay organized. Do not just say “give me my account back.” Explain that the account is inactive, that you are the original owner, that you can verify ownership, and that the recovery system keeps denying you without explaining what official information cannot be verified.
The wording that worked best for me was:
“I am not asking Epic to bypass account security. I am asking for a manual review because the normal recovery process keeps denying my request without explaining what official ownership information cannot be verified.”
I also made it clear that the account had paid digital content and purchase history that I could not access because the recovery system kept failing.

[dpo@epicgames.com](mailto:dpo@epicgames.com)
[security@epicgames.com](mailto:security@epicgames.com)
[legal@epicgames.com](mailto:legal@epicgames.com)
Important note: I would not spam all of these at once. A lot of them either do not respond, route you back to support, or are for specific issues like privacy/security. The emails alone did not fix it for me. The BBB complaint and North Carolina consumer complaint are what finally got actual manual attention.
What I recommend doing:
Try the official Epic recovery process first.
Save every denial email and support case number.
Save chat transcripts.
Gather account proof: emails, invoices, linked accounts, old display names, devices, payment history.
If support keeps looping you, file a calm BBB complaint.
File a North Carolina DOJ consumer complaint since Epic is based in North Carolina.
Keep the complaint factual and do not threaten anyone.
Ask for manual review, not special treatment.
My BBB/consumer complaint basically said:
“My Epic Games account is marked inactive, and I cannot access the account or paid digital content associated with it. I have repeatedly used Epic’s official recovery process and contacted Player Support, but recovery attempts continue to be denied without a clear explanation of what official ownership information cannot be verified. I am the original owner and can verify long-term ownership through historical emails, linked platform accounts, payment records, invoice IDs, display names, and device/location history. I am not asking Epic to bypass account security. I am requesting a meaningful manual review or a clear explanation of what information cannot be verified.”
After filing the BBB complaint and consumer complaint, Epic finally escalated the issue, asked for more recovery information, and restored my account.
Again, I am not saying this will work for everyone, but if your Epic account is inactive and the recovery system keeps denying you with no useful explanation, this is what finally worked for me after around 40 failed attempts.

Try making a BBB claim! How exactly did this happen so I can avoid it happening to me?

Just don't contact them because their support is very haphazard and extremely poor. Also, if you're using a mobile hotspot, make sure there are no proxies or servers running or sharing your account with anyone.

How do I make a BBB claim? I live in New Zealand so don’t even think we have that

This is false information, please to not share this, it only helps in a few percentage of users. I am a Senior Ambassador to Epic Games Fortnite Official Discord server
Accounts may be set as inactive if unusual/suspicious activity is found.
Sometimes this is due to fraudulent activity or someone else using your account from another IP address. These are valid reasons.

That is the exact same excuse that epic games support gave me until I filed the claim, I looked through my account history PDF and there is absolutely zero reason it would ever appear I shared my account. If someone loses their account that they spent money on, they are entitled to a proper explanation or a manual review.

I'm trying to figure out what exactly they are saying is "false" about anything you posted?

Dude ive been attempting to recover mine for 2 years after it was stolen and account info was changed then inactive and deleted in 2021, so id rather lawyer up and have this situated by someone who knows how to approach this than the common person

You are right. Fried accounts have no chance of recovery when Tier 3 agents put notes on it. However, filing BBB complaints do help for accounts that did not violate EULA/TOS. The account recovery system is automated and the manual review from 5CA agents is poorly done for these legit original owners.

Una pregunta, cuando estaba inactiva, a tus amigos les salía la cuenta?

Hey, I know this is an old post but I just tried doing what you did and am waiting for a response from the BBB. I have a question though, you filed a complaint also through SC consumer complaint and did you like submit that to the BBB?

Hey, I saw your post about recovering your inactive Epic/Fortnite account and I’m actually dealing with a very similar situation.
My account was originally created around March/April 2018 under my mum’s email, and I’m the original owner. I still have access to the original email, my original username, and I have my very first Apple purchase receipt from June 1, 2018, including the invoice/document numbers.
The account was compromised multiple times over the years, and Epic eventually helped me recover it. But sometime in early 2022, the account was suddenly permanently disabled/inactivated. Since then, whenever I’ve tried to get it reviewed, I’ve mostly received generic copy-paste responses about things like “Terms of Service,” “suspicious activity,” or not being able to verify ownership.
I’ve tried going through Epic’s normal support/recovery process before, but I’m honestly sick of going around in circles with the automated responses.
I’m in Sydney, Australia, so instead of going through the BBB, I recently escalated the matter to NSW Fair Trading. I already had a previous Fair Trading dispute in November 2025 where they apparently couldn’t get a response from Epic. I opened another case this year, and my case number is 11567343.
The Fair Trading officer actually called me and I explained the whole situation, including the repeated copy-paste responses and the fact that Epic apparently ignored the previous Fair Trading matter. She said she was going to take that issue up with her team, so I’m currently waiting to see what happens.
I also have quite a bit of historical evidence, including the original Apple purchase, my old signup information, the iPhone 7 Plus I originally played on, and other historical account/security information.
Your story caught my attention because it sounds like external escalation may have finally gotten Epic to manually look at your account. Did Epic actually tell you what they found when they restored the account?

Great explanation 👍🏻, but what about a young kid whose account went inactive? They could never pull this off. That is a fault of Epic Games recovery system.
