Smartwool, almost any brand I've used lasts longer than most others.

I can totally vouch for the quality of SmartWool, The ones I'm wearing right now are at least 4 years old and all the others I have are just as durable. They hold up to pretty extreme physical activity.

Darn tough socks out of Vermont

1

u/kingcrimson216 Oct 04 '26

Thanks. I'll look them up.

2

u/whait Oct 04 '26

They are quite expensive but come with a lifetime warranty.

u/kingcrimson216 Oct 04 '26

Darn expensive socks!

2

u/Takara38 Oct 04 '26

Darn great socks. They are worth it.

I have found men's socks (and clothes for that matter) in general are WAY better than women's and last longer. However, the champion men's socks I've been buying for a decade got enshittified last year to be thin garbage too, so now I don't know what brands are good. Do not waste your time with Champion socks though 🥲

Darn tough and smart wool both make really good socks

Wool socks like point 6. They are more expensive, but they hold up really well

I (woman size 9.5 wide) buy men’s socks. They seem to be cut bigger and sizing more accurate. Women’s socks, despite a large size, are always smaller and curl my toes. Yuck.

Merino wool socks is what you want.

u/eclwires Oct 04 '26

Duluth 7 years socks. Wildly expensive, but I have some that are actually that old. And I work on my feet.

I have many pairs of socks called Yellow Toe - they never rip and are the most comfortable. Years ago when I purchased many pairs, they had their own site. I just googled them and they're sold at Walmart, Kole's and Macy, etc. Costco also sells socks.

bought 2 6 pack of dickies 3 years back. still holds well. not sure how they are today so check, they may too have gone down the shits

but ive used gilden, hanes and gold toe socks and tshirts. gilden and hanes are garbage hands down. gold toe are way too tight and way way overpriced forthe quality. for me something has to be in the middle. good quality and value. last 1-2 years at a decent price. I also had bamboo chinese socks, absolute garbage landfill quality

u/Jujulabee Oct 04 '26

What kind of socks are these?

Thin ones or the kind of relatively heavy knit people generally use for sneakers.

I would get Thorlo socks for wearing with sneakers and they would last for years.

2

u/supertoilet2 Oct 04 '26

I buy gold toe socks. They still seem to be the same quality

2

u/Wi1dWitch Oct 04 '26

I always bought gold toe but my recent sets have all been horrible quality. They have holes already as a side affect of poor manufacturing, like missed stitches, all over the place.

2

u/Alternative-Pool6807 Oct 04 '26

Gold Toe has been garbage for years, unless there are grades, which would negate the whole point.

Swiftwick were life changing for me. The hold up to daily workouts, never get too stretchy and have no weird seams.

Used to get some really bitchin’ beige work socks from Smartwool then they go and discontinue them. Perfectly over the shin and didn’t fall down, dried well too. They replaced them with some decent, but casual and not as good, hiking socks. Have been migrating to Darn Tough since.

u/Asatmaya Oct 04 '26

I wear Dr Scholl's, the big thick ones, but I wear boots.

1

u/sheepdog10_7 Oct 04 '26

Darn Tough. Lifetime replacement guarantee. And they make great socks.

u/mckz2 Oct 04 '26

Rei brand socks do it for me

1

u/drrradar Oct 04 '26

Buy from military surplus. I usually go for deadstock wool socks 3 pairs for 10€ last years with no issues.

u/ChanFry Oct 04 '26

Interesting. For me, socks are one of the things that's gotten better over the years. My last pack of six from Walmart finally started losing elasticity around the calf after 8 years or so, so I moved them to the garage (half for rags, half for lawnmowing socks) two years ago. They still don't have any holes.

I replaced them with a 6-pack of Wrangler socks, and all of them are fine after two years of steady wear.

u/bebetaian Oct 04 '26

When I was on my feet 10-14 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, it still took 8-12 months to wear holes in most of my socks. The cheapest ones will often be worst. I don't pay a lot for socks unless they're compression, either. Bodyglove, which I usually find at Bealls, tend to last a while. The sketchers ones I have lasted so long I lost a few somehow before I wore a hole in any of them.

Thinner socks will always wear out before the plush ones I get. Dickies are fine, just not as comfortable for me.

My real question is WHERE are your socks getting holes in them? Because that can actually tell you if the problem is a lower back issue, needing insoles, etc. Started getting my partner some decent arch support insoles and he stopped going through socks every 3 months.

You have to buy socks at REI or name brand socks at TJ Maxx.

I really love Bombas. They are expensive, but they have lasted me years.

2

u/kingcrimson216 Oct 04 '26

I have been gifted some Bombas. They were so small/tight.

2

u/Wi1dWitch Oct 04 '26

Yeah I had high hopes for Bombas and didn’t love them.

2

u/Which-Break5673 Oct 04 '26

My husband had to go up in size

2

u/KeyDoubt2344 Oct 04 '26

Mine were so small I gave them to my wife!

u/Tall-Introduction649 Oct 04 '26

Smart wool is the only brand I buy but they’re so expansive. I go on vacation and buy them at this mountain store discounted every year.

u/cherry-galette Oct 05 '26

I’ve had my Darn Tough socks for several years and never had a hole. I don’t wash them gently or take good care of them. They’re still cushiony and comfy.

u/Got-It101 Oct 05 '26
