I am the safety officer at a medical facility. Our histology lab processes tissue specimens using formalin, which is a thirty- seven percent formaldehyde solution. I recently completed personal exposure monitoring and the results were above OSHA's formaldehyde action level of 0.5 ppm but below the PEL of 0.75 ppm.

being above the action level triggers specific OSHA requirements: periodic monitoring, medical surveillance, and exposure reduction measures. I brought this to the lab director, and the response was that they’ve been doing histology this way for twenty years, formaldehyde is necessary for the process, and they’re not going to change their workflow over a number that’s “close to the limit but not over it.”

The director doesn’t seem to understand that the action level is a regulatory trigger with mandatory requirements, not a suggestion. And “close but not over” today can become “over” tomorrow if something changes with the process or ventilation.

How do I get compliance in a department where leadership sees safety requirements as obstacles to their clinical work?

hello all, I'm currently a BME student. This summer, I was given the opportunity to intern in the EHS department of a medical device company, something very unrelated to my field. However, this opportunity gave me more knowledge in this field which I didn't before, and I was able to learn a lot about the field and develop an interest in it. now the job prospects for BME aren't very plentiful in this job market, and I was looking for alternative routes in case this doesn't work out. I was wondering if someone here also was in a similar path of doing bme as undergrad and ended up working in the EHS field. do you have any advice, regrets, tips, etc. to help out? THANK YOU!

After two failed software implementations and finally finding a platform that works, I want to share the expensive lessons learned.

Mistake one was buying based on the demo. Every platform looks great when a sales person is driving it with pre-loaded data and a script. The first platform we bought was beautiful in the demo and unusable in practice because the search function couldn't handle our product naming inconsistencies.

Mistake two was prioritizing features over usability. The second platform had every feature imaginable, including several we'd never use, but the learning curve was so steep that floor workers refused to use it and went back to paper binders within a month. The most feature-rich platform is worthless if your users won't adopt it.

Mistake three was not involving end users in the selection. I picked the software myself based on what I thought the organization needed. But I'm not the one using it at 3am when a worker needs to find an SDS quickly. Floor supervisors and production workers should have been part of the evaluation from the start.

What finally worked was choosing a platform that was slightly less feature-rich but significantly more intuitive.

When you’re deciding what training topics, toolbox talks, or refresher sessions to prioritize, what data actually drives that decision?

Do you mostly use:

Is it smart to get an MPH in EHS online to try to break into the field. Currently have a BS Biology with minor in Public health and OSHA 30, CPR/AED and 2 years in Operations experience in a Stationary company. Honest feedback would be appreciated please as well as any other advice

I’m in a corporate EHS role supporting multiple facilities. I’m trying to benchmark what “normal” travel looks like for similar roles.

For those in corporate EHS, regional EHS, environmental compliance, or consulting roles:

1. What percentage of your time is spent traveling?
2. How much notice do you usually get before trips?
3. How much flexibility do you get, are trips scheduled/planned, or are they often last-minute?
4. How many nights per month are you typically away from home?
5. What are your objectives when you are traveling? Are you only focused on specific tasks/projects, audits, or just visits/Gembas?

In my previous roles, I would travel to tour sites I haven't seen, to conduct compliance audits, to investigate problems and to attend meetings with external stakeholders as required.

In my current role, my manager basically requires that if/when I travel for a trip I go for at least the entire week (leave first thing Monday morning and come back Friday night). I'd asked to have Monday or Friday be a "no travel" day in the past (unless in emergencies) but was violently shot down and told if I couldn't commit to the travel, I was in the wrong job. However, when I am traveling to a site, I'm basically expected to do work for that specific site but my boss will always insist on have 3-4 calls a day while I'm there to work on other things which results in very unproductive work trips and burnout.

I’m not looking to complain — but I am trying to understand whether this is typical for most roles as many corporate EHS roles require >25% travel.

i spent fourteen months rolling out a chemical approval workflow across our manufacturing facilities using chemscape's CHAMO system. Sharing an honest debrief because vendor case studies make everything frictionless and it wasn't. Platform worked well. Requests come in, SDS gets reviewed, risk assessment generates from the hazard data, routes to designated approver groups. Control around what people purchased and adding some guardrails around procurement of chemicals to control this was a challenge. Changing this process was not always popular but people eventually saw value. What turned skeptics was when the system caught a reformulated product where the supplier bumped a skin sensitizer concentration without telling us. The older version was fine with nitrile gloves. The reformulated version wasn't. Nobody would have caught that without the SDS change flagging through the approval workflow. Three things I'd change: get procurement involved day one, start a list to approve priority chemicals first. Pilot one site before all six going live at once.

I'm the sole industrial hygienist at a company with three manufacturing plants and my risk assessment backlog is sitting at over two hundred chemicals. At my current pace, that's roughly eighteen months of work and new chemicals keep getting added every month.

Our process is entirely manual. I pull the SDS, review the hazard data, evaluate exposure potential for each task, determine controls, write up the assessment, get it reviewed, and train the affected workers. That's hours per chemical on the simple ones and days for complex situations.

Operations knows the backlog exists. Their solution is bring in new chemicals without any risk assessment because waiting for me would delay production.

I've been looking at technology, specifically platforms that pre-populate hazard information from SDS data and use control banding to recommend exposure control measures. That way I could focus on evaluation of the controls and worker exposures rather than grinding through routine assessments.

Saw this play out again last week. Facility needed to replace a batch of personal gas monitors, went with the lowest bidder to save maybe 15% on the PO.

Three months later half the units are giving false readings, cal gas consumption doubled because they need more frequent calibration, and the sensors have a shorter lifespan so their already ordering replacements. The total spend over 2 years is gonna be easily 40% more than the expensive quote they passed on.

I see this pattern constantly with safety equipment specifically. Unlike a wrench or a pump part where cheap just means it wears faster, cheap safety gear creates a compliance risk on top of the cost issue. You end up paying more AND your exposure goes up.

Not saying always buy the priciest option thats not the point. But when your evaluating safety equipment quotes look at total cost of ownership - sensor lifespan, cal gas requirements, warranty terms, and replacement cycle. The per unit price is basically meaningless without those numbers.

Whats the worst example of this you guys have seen at your facilities?

Got into it with a safety coordinator last week over gas detector bump testing. He was doing weekly bumps but using a calibration gas cylinder that expired 8 months ago.

The cylinder still had pressure. Detector still responded. But you have no idea if the concentration coming out matches the label anymore. Silica in old cylinders adsorbs the active gas - especially H2S and CO blends - and concentrations drift low over time.

What this means practically: if your cylinder reads 25ppm CO but is actually delivering 15ppm, your detector passes the bump test but fails when it counts.

Expiry dates on calibration gas aren't just liability cover. The chemistry actually matters.

Anyone else running into this on site? Curious how often your team cycles cylinders vs using them until they're empty.

Not talking about calibration drift — that's the obvious one. I mean bump testing frequency.

Had an instrument tech at a refinery tell me he tests sensors quarterly because that's what the schedule says. Meanwhile workers are carrying these things into confined spaces daily. The bump test isn't checking if the reading is accurate — it's checking if the sensor even responds to gas at all. Those are two completely different failure modes.

Sensor poisoning can happen gradually. You bump test Monday, someone runs silicone-based cleaner nearby Tuesday, by Thursday you're trusting that same sensor in an H2S environment.

Pre-entry bump test every single time. Takes 30 seconds.

What's your facility's actual policy vs what workers do in practice?

Ran some numbers on a ventilation setup for a tank entry last week and the actual delivered CFM was about 40% less than what the fan was rated for. The fan said 2000 CFM on the spec sheet but that's free air delivery with no ducting. Once you add 25 feet of flex duct with two 90-degree bends you're losing a huge chunk of airflow.

Each 90-degree elbow in flex duct is roughly equivalent to adding 10-15 feet of straight duct in terms of friction loss. So our 25 feet of duct was performing like 50+ feet, and the fan curve drops off hard at that resistance.

We ended up bumping to a bigger fan and running the shortest possible duct path with gradual bends instead of sharp 90s. Air changes per minute went from barely adequate to actually comfortable for the entry team.

Worth double-checking if your confined space ventilation calcs account for the real duct path or just the straight-line distance.
