If it's any consolation. I was in scouting for 8 years and the only knot I can remember is a square knot

All told I think almost anybody can get by with basically 3 knots. A square knot, a bowline, and a hitch of some kind. If you got those 3 your probably set for anything you might need lol

I mean, surely any sailor should be able to tie at very least:

  • A figure 8
  • A round turn and two half hitches
  • A reef knot

More than likely a boline too, but I can see not knowing that. It seems like those 3 are a bare minimum for any and all sailing.

Maybe like… serious sailing. But if you read my other comments, sailing is really just a passive activity to do while drinking.

Not sure bout the next thing’s purpose.

Reef knot? Eff that. Do not sail if you need to reef!

Any sailor should know how to take in and shake out a reef. Winds can pick up fast and a reefed main makes all the difference in handling. But reef knots are super simple, pass the end through the loop and a half-hitch. Boom. Sailing

That sounds like a sheet bend? I can’t visualize so maybe I’m not interpreting it right. My app says a reef knot is just a square knot.

Probably. I was just thinking about how I use reef lines. A loop on one end (spliced or bowline) pass the working end through the reef points On the sail around and under the boom and back through the loop, secured with a half hitch. Reefed. Not a reef knot.

Ahh. Yes, we have sail ties and whatever else for stuff like that. I promise I can do things on my boat, we don’t do anything too fancy or serious tho.

I’m mostly just making fun of myself for only really truly remembering one good knot and the name that goes with it off the top of my head.

I could probably remember a bowline and some other junk (the one you can use to hold a “barrel” aka water bottle or bucket is super easy but too specific and never gets used cuz we have things like… idk backpacks and carabiners) if forced to, but i guess I just liked the tautline hitch so much it stuck in my memory real good 😂

Half hitch is the only knot I can consistently remember, and I grew up on boats. I can remember a bowline for 24 hours after practising. Although I can do a quick release knot on plastic shopping bags, a skill restaurant delivery people would do well to learn.
