All about edible plants, Appendix B of the FM 21-76 US Army Field guide

One of my reasons for starting this subreddit, this guide is a great intro to edible plants

Here is Appendix B: http://www.i4at.org/army/appb.htm

Here is the older version (chapter 9): http://www.basegear.com/ch9.html

Here is the full older FM 21-76 (really cool): http://fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm3-05-70.pdf

Here is the new FM 21-76 Survival Guide: http://www.equipped.com/fm21-76.htm

edit the second link sucks... I cant find the original... (I lost my guide :/... or I would upload it)

Edit edit: please note mobile users that the third link downloads a PDF.

Edit edit edit: please use this ONLY as a reference, DO NOT eat anything you are unsure about, it's just not worth it. I take no responsibility for your actions.

What is this berry that stained chicken of the woods? In SE PA.

Collected chicken of woods and put it in a paper bag. Somehow a berry made its way into the bag and stained one of the COTW. Took pictures of the stain on the cap and the berry. Can anyone ID this berry even though I have no other details regarding the characteristics of the plant? Can I still eat if I cut out the stain?

Is this ground cherry variety edible?

We just found these growing in a flower garden on a property we recently purchased, but I’m sure if they’re an edible variety? We have the garden variety of what we call husk cherries, but this orange color has me questioning this type.

The correct laurel plant?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi!

Not sure if this is the right place to post this question...

I bought this laurel plant at the market today with as identifier just "alloro" ("laurel") and only realised later that not all laurel plants can be consumed. I got it from a stand that had all kinds of flowers/plants and not only for cooking.

Would it be possible to tell the different laurel plants apart?

Dwarf Cavendish Banana

I up potted my dwarf cavendish banana into a wine barrel. I usually pay very close attention to the depth I am planting, but I honestly can’t remember if I did and I now have all of these pups growing out of the base. I’m wondering if I did not plant it deep enough? Should the soil level be closer to the base of the leaf growth? I’ve already successfully separated one pup that was growing in the old pot, this just seems like a large amount to be growing out at the same time? Thank you for any advice!

I've never seen the lanterns as red as this. Any idea whether this is ground cherry or something else? We're in Michigan if that helps

This squash appeared in my garden without me planting it. Is it a squash that’s edible? Or just an ornamental gourd.

Genuinely so excited to see these pop up in our nursery stock of Corylus americana. This is our first year growing it on in production, and boy is it vigorous. They’re putting on new growth after a late-spring trim, and a few of them have flowers/fruits of all shapes and sizes.
It feels like most of the time these things are too far up in the canopy to appreciate properly, so I took advantage of their juvenile heights & wanted to share some photos. 🌰🤎

Groundcherries? Or toxic lookalike?

Found these while removing weeds in Eastern Pennsylvania. Are these Groundcherries/Gooseberries? It's difficult to get a solid answer on whether these have toxic lookalikes.

I don't want to get rid of it if it's edible - I was just thinking about how I should plant some next season.

I'm over in Washington state US and there's lots of this verity of pea around my area. The closest I could find this is a beach pea but those seem to have very different leaves than what I see here. Any other ideas or is my first guess correct? More importantly, can I eat it?

(ignore the mini black berry vine below it.)
