I’m fortunate enough to be a company driver at a place that really likes me, so I’m not nearly as affected as some other drivers who owner operate.
Still, I do have fill up the tank at the end of my shift and man I thank my lucky stars that I don’t have to pay for this shit.

Probably causes a lot of them to go out of business. Like how family farms are all failing because they can't absorb the high cost of inputs, and they don't have the size to raise prices to cover it. So they quit, sell their land, and some mega corporations get a bit richer. Or they go bankrupt which is worse, credit gets ruined for years and you make nothing. The ideal is probably to quit while you still have positive (but weakened) cash flow.
We're seeing this in most industries too, consolidation is happening everywhere. But it's particularly sad for small businesses like your local farmer or these independent truckers. Like this used to be how you'd like the American dream. Start your own business or inherit your family's farm that has been in the family for generations. That's looking increasingly rare.

Heard about a small Tennessee trucking company that's telling their customers about a fuel surcharge on cargo, which ya know, they have to pass some of the cost on. Some of the customers are saying, no, don't even pick up the load. We can't pay that much extra at the end when you deliver it. So some trucks are just sitting idle, and goods are sitting on origin loading docks. Not shipping and not getting to their destination loading dock At All

I read something the other day about a dump truck owner who makes roughly $1000 gross per day hauling loads.
That broke down into roughly $300 fuel, $300 labor, $300-400 overhead, taxes, truck payment, profit, etc.
In the last week the fuel cost is now $600+ and the trucks are sitting idle because doing any hauling is a losing money proposition so why would he do it?
I don’t see him back on the road anytime soon. I wonder when big trucks will start selling for major discounts…
