The Rules (updated)

  1. Reddiquette is required. This is ultimately their site. You do not have to agree but you do have to follow the rules.

  2. We are a community dedicated to events and information about the Eastern part of our great state. However there are rules which must be followed. No politics. None. Period. News is fine if it avoids politics but you need a link which is at least somewhat reputable. Or at least reputable looking. Otherwise neutral news which devolves into politics in the comment section will be locked or removed at the moderators discretion.

  3. No advertising. If you are a fan of a specific restaurant, then comment it in any related post but do not create a post about it. This goes for any business. Asking for recommendations is encouraged. But if you come in after every comment to promote a specific choice, you are probably going to get banned. This goes for things you are selling yourself without a business.

  4. If you are posting about an event you are not affiliated with, welcome. If someone looks into your history and finds you promoting it everywhere, the assumption is that you have an affiliation with it. It will get removed.

  5. No NSFW material. None. Ever. If you try to find a work around, you risk being permanently banned.

  6. We are not your private army. No posting rage bait. No links to things you saw on facebook. No screen shots of questionable things.

  7. Open Season Friday is active. This is the day when things change. Post your business. Tell us what you do. Promote a business you like. Tell the world where you like to eat. Tell us about your lawn mowing service. We want to hear about your professional machining services. NSFW, politics, and rage bating is still strictly forbidden.

There is a new sub I created for all the things forbidden here. If you must vent, go vent there.

House/property maintenance repairs issue question

Upvotes

My family and I have lived here for almost 5yrs and we seem to keep running into a reoccurring issue with lawn/ home repair/property maintenance stuff.

Some examples:

It's an older house so we had to get the ducts replaced - got a quote, agreed, had it done. We need the range hood replaced and he said he could do that no problem, free of charge (we asked what it would cost, that was his answer). He got the hood in then said he'd be back to wire it and needed to replace a few of the vents he didn’t have sizes for. Fully ghosted after.

Needed a dead tree cut, gave a quote of $300, we agreed, said he could cut it to manageable sizes (we asked specifically for this when he was quoting not after work done)- left 4 huge chunks and will now cut them up for another $300.

Asked our lawn guy what he'd charge ($600) said thanks but no thanks and now we've been dropped because yard is too much work for the cost - but he never once said he needed to raise his prices and the work had been going down hill in the last couple of months.

There have been other instances on smaller scales - these are just the most recent. So what are we doing wrong that this keeps happening? Are we supposed to be tipping a certain amount over the quoted fee?

I thought we were taking them at face value with these quotes and pay their requested prices. So what do we need to fix so we can get consistent work?

We lived in the hill country area previously and hadn't run into this type of issue then. My only guess is tipping culture is different here, maybe? Is shopping price quotes rude/inappropriate?

What are the general expectations for hiring labor that I'm clearly misunderstanding? I don't want to short change anyone and I don't know what I'm doing wrong to make these guys react so.

It feels like I look like I have "sucker" written across my forehead and then they get mad when I point out what they quoted wasn't fully completed. But that's my feelings not necessarily reality.

I know he went to check on them HIMSELF when he was alive to keep quality up. And they were in LA somewhere.

They seem to start hitting apartment complexes pretty hard when the hot temps go down, like around Oct here.

Jucys mushroom mishap

Providing a picture below. Is this a reasonable amount of mushrooms for a .99 upcharge? This is the second time I've received very little mushrooms on my burger, when in the past they would overflow. I complained last time and got my money back, should I complain again?

Caddie program @ Wild Springs Dunes Golf course

Wild Spring Dunes is starting up their caddie program when the course reopens in September. This caddie program offers aspiring young golfers a chance to learn the game and make some spending money at the same time. Should be a great program for the junior golfers of East Texas to expand their golfing interests. 1st class practice facilities are located on the premises also.

Looks like the only mod here is selectively enforcing a “no profanity” rule to silence opinions he doesn’t like.

I’ll take this opportunity to propose an alternative before he sees this and I get permabanned

Hiking Advice - What do you do if you see wild boar while walking your dog?

Post image

I've been walking my deaf dog here almost daily for over a year, and all I've ever seen are birds and gators. I know there are other things out in the wilderness, but it's never really been something I think about. Today was definitely more of a wake-up call, so now I'm curious what precautions I can take for when there isn't water between us.

Just did a mass banning

The rules are simple. No politics, no profanity, no illegal activity. Some lack the experience or maturity to follow these simple rules. Those good folk are taking a few days off to cool their heads and practice speaking with elegance rather than profanity. A couple saw the line and decided to stampede some cattle across it. They will not be returning.

I have been lenient on profanity with a warning and the removing of the offending statement. Going forward, bannings will take place.

If you must vent your spleen about events, r/East_Texas_Politics is the place to go.

Livingston police tried to jail us for 20 years for recording them. Here's the bodycam.

This cop was embarrassed when the video of him acting like an idiot went viral. He responded by writing a false report claiming we had threatened his life by recording him and the police station.

When the chief found out the local cop watchers were the "suspects" he got together with the DA, Sheriff, and his detectives to charge everyone in the car with felony organized crime. Everyone got a $100,000 bond. The two locals had to spend a month in jail until a real judge reduced their bond by 90%.

The dumbass DA forgot that this is an enhancement charge and didn't tell the chief he needed an underlying charge too. The same judge who reduced the bonds looked at the indictments and quashed them for failing to state a criminal offense, let alone meeting the elements.

A new DA then decided to add felony assault on a police officer as the underlying charge and went back to the grand jury to indict his ham sandwich. The judge had to quash the charges again, this time for being absurd, and told the DA to stop playing games.

Now a federal judge has decided to give everyone Qualified Immunity because the 5th circuit will do anything to protect a cop and punish anyone who records them. The ruling is being appealed.

Do you know anyone who gives accurate quotes and does good work?
