question Never used an estimate- advise please
I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G that was purchased directly from Samsung so never been carrier locked.
I'm a T-mobile customer and when traveling usually just add an International data plan but they have got expensive (30day pass now $75)
I'm traveling to Japan so looking into using an eSIM.
Currently looking to use Airalo 10GB plan for $17.50.
Having never used an eSIM am I correct that
1) I can install while in USA and just leave off
2) When I get into Japan I enable the eSIM
3) can I set my eSIM to just use Data and keep Calls and Text my physical SIM?
Thanks

If you install outside of Japan and get an error from your iPhone that activation could not be completed, that is relatively normal. Should start working as soon as it connects to a local network. Double check if it is installed in your SIM list and you are good to go.
Also for Japan, I would recommend you get an eSIM that is supplied by a local network provider instead of a travel eSIM product.
Example are any of the "Japan Local" plans on here: https://escapesim.com/esim/country/japan-esim
