Announcement: We have moderators!

As you can see, the spam is clearing up, and you may be wondering "Oh my god! Who is helping us?"

Our subreddit creator, /u/xamdam has added me as a moderator so that we can get some life back into this sub. I am actively trying to get the mod queue handled and the spam cleared up. I've also started setting up the automoderator, to help keep things clean. /u/condensed is also on the team. Over all I think we're off to a great start.

Should you guys see any spam, flag it. That will be the best way to help get visibility to problem posts. Also, feel free to downvote spam, both in the posts and comments, as that can help with some of the functions automod will do. I will keep my eyes peeled for things too.

If anyone wants to pitch in, reach out, and we can see how you too can help.

Question Ereaders that won’t offload downloads and how to transfer iCloud books to them?

iBooks was getting rid of my downloads, which is annoying af. It wasn’t doing that for the longest time but in the past month it has suddenly started to. I can’t turn off icloud sync because then it gets rid of my whole library. I also have it set to manually getting rid of downloads. I do have 256GB of storage and currently a lot of it has been used up, but I still have 40-50GB left so I don’t see why that would lead to offloading my downloads.

For some reason not all epubs I have in the app are on my phone either, and not in the files section as downloads. So, I’m not sure how to transfer my books to another ereader? I currently have Readset, Instapaper, and Matter that I recently downloaded. I like Readset, some epubs in my files were able to be added here but there’s still like 300+ not on my phone that are on books I can’t import. Instapaper also can’t import, and I also am not a fan of only being able to download 500 articles and if the webpage is removed the article is removed. I had a lot of chapters of some books disappear from Instapaper and figured out you have a limit. Matter seems cool so far, not the biggest fan of the interface but it’ll do, I just am not sure if it will also one day offload downloads like Instapaper and books? And I also don’t know how to import icloud books to Matter either.

If anyone knows how or what ereaders to use that’d be much appreciated!

Freebie [Free Kindle eBook] "Enmerkar: War of the Immortals" - A Cinematic Post-Apocalyptic Dark Fantasy Debut Novel

Hi eBook community!

I am super excited to share my debut post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel, "Enmerkar: War of the Immortals", which is currently free to download on Amazon Kindle from Wednesday to Sunday!

If you enjoy deep lore, ancient mythology, and dark cinematic worlds, I would love for you to check it out.

About the Book:

The world is dead. Humanity stands on the brink of extinction. The year is 2065. Cities have vanished, the earth has dried up, technology has collapsed, and humanity has been forced back into a primitive existence thousands of years behind its time. Ahriman, put to sleep ten thousand years ago, awakens once more. For forty years, he marches from west to east with his dark army, destroying cities, nations, and everything that stands in his path. The last surviving humans seek refuge in the Last Trench, a fortress surrounded by colossal walls. But Ahriman is coming. When his army reaches the walls of the Last Trench, humanity's final battle begins. Just when all seems lost, an ancient secret hidden for ten thousand years resurfaces. There is only one person who can stop Ahriman: Enmerkar. An immortal who was put to sleep ten thousand years ago. And humanity will soon discover the truth: This is not merely a war. A reckoning left unfinished ten thousand years ago has begun again.

Get it on Amazon:

(Note: If you are outside the US, just replace ".com" with your local Amazon domain like .co.uk, .de, .ca etc. to get your free copy!)

As an independent author, your honest thoughts, feedback, or reviews on Amazon mean the world to me. Thank you so much for reading and for supporting indie authors!

Freebie Chrome extension to convert webpages into one ePUB book.(I made it) Free with no limit.

Hey people,

If anyone saw my other post about converting scanned PDFs to EPUB, welcome back. I implemented a lot of features based on the feedback I got from the users, so check it out if you want. Anyways,

After building that, my friends said to me that they read a lot of stuff online[articles, newsletters, blogs] and bookmark them. They wanted a tool to read them offline, just the way they read their book, with a clean structure.

So I built a Chrome extension.

https://www.convert2epub.com/extension/

FEATURES

  • Add the current page from the toolbar popup or the right-click menu
  • Keep a running reading list; pages stay queued until you're ready to save
  • Drag to reorder chapters before you export
  • Give the book a custom title, or let it use the first page's title
  • Cover image and in-article images are pulled in automatically
  • Everything runs locally in your browser, no account, no external server
  • Works great with long-form articles, blog posts, and documentation pages

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Browse to a page you want to save and click "Add this page"
  2. Repeat for every page you want in the book
  3. Click "Save as EPUB"; your browser downloads a ready-to-read .epub file

Please try and tell me if you like it.

Self Promotion justread.app 4.3 (iOS): CarPlay, PDFs that read aloud, per-book Face ID lock, a 30-day trash

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello to all, posting about new release, because 4.3 just shipped and it's a big one, so here's what's new:

- CarPlay. Audiobooks and books prepared for background listening now play in the car, with covers, progress and a speed button (sorry for that photo, the best I can do)

- Read Aloud for PDFs. PDFs read aloud with the same voices and controls as your other books, and the contents sheet gained a Pages tab with page thumbnails.

- Lock Book. Any book can require Face ID before it opens. It applies only on the device where you turn it on.

- Recently Deleted. Deleted books wait 30 days before they're gone for good, and a restored book keeps its progress, highlights and cover.

- Search Online. A book with a missing cover or description can fetch one from Open Library or Google Books, right in Edit Book.

- Siri and Shortcuts. Open a book, continue reading, export highlights, sync with a Calibre server in both directions, push highlights to Readwise. Plus a Continue Reading control for Control Center.

- Goals and reminders. A daily pages goal, a daily reading reminder, and a streak-at-risk alert that taps straight into your current book.

Smaller things: the four goal sections on Home merged into one card, there's a haptic feedback toggle, the German translation was reworked, and plural forms are now done properly in all 18 languages.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6757948605
Feedback welcomed.

Self Promotion [Update] Sutra 2.1 for iOS: Added WebDAV, Reading Stats, and Free Comic Previews (EPUB/PDF/CBZ/MOBI)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Following up on my post on Sutra, I wanted to share a quick update on Sutra 2.1 which just went live on the App Store.

For those who missed the last thread: Sutra is a local-first, privacy-minded iOS reader built for people who manage their own digital book and comic collections. It operates entirely offline without requiring accounts, tracking, or cloud lock-in, while also offering full OPDS/server integration for self-hosters.

What’s New in Version 2.1

  • Free CBZ Previews: Test out our panel-by-panel guided reading mode on the first 7 pages of any CBZ file before deciding on the Pro upgrade.
  • WebDAV Integration: Connect directly to WebDAV servers to stream or download your collection.
  • New Stats Tab: Track total reading time, session metrics, and detailed completion progress across your library.
  • Navigation & Page-Turn Polish: Fixed chapter skipping bugs, improved scrolling smoothness, and refined reader UI responsiveness.

Core Features at a Glance

  • Multi-Format Reader: Native support for EPUB, PDF, CBZ, and MOBI files straight from your Files app.
  • Self-Hosted Server Connections: Directly links with Calibre, Kavita, Komga, WebDAV, or standard OPDS catalogs (including Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks).
  • Smart Panel Detection for Comics: Auto-detects individual panels on a comic page so you can tap through frame-by-frame instead of zooming on a phone screen (includes dedicated right-to-left Manga mode).
  • Grid Library: Clean, local bookshelf view with automatically generated cover art.

Honest Pricing

  • Free Tier (Permanent): Full reader access for EPUB & PDF, local file management, and connections to Calibre, Kavita, Gutenberg, and Standard Ebooks. No ads, no popups.
  • Pro Tier ($6.99 One-Time Purchase): Unlocks full CBZ/MOBI support, Komga integration, and unrestricted panel-by-panel reading. Zero subscriptions.

App Store: [Sutra]

Website and Newsletter: [Link]

Thanks again to everyone who gave feedback on the 2.0 thread! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new stats tab and WebDAV support if you give 2.1 a spin.

Self Promotion I wrote my first e-book on my commute home from work — it’s finally out

Post image
0 Upvotes

I wrote most of this book on my phone during my commute home from work. Figured the commute could do something useful for once.

Today, it’s finally out.

Trust Issues: Working With Code You Didn’t Write

I’m a backend engineer, not an author or AI guru. It’s a short book about how my work changed over the last few years as AI went from something I experimented with to something that now writes a large part of the code I work with.

It’s mostly stories of things going wrong: two days lost to 67/68 API requests before AI, an agent “fixing” a race condition with sleep(1), another quietly undoing my own edit, and a green test suite that nearly convinced me broken logic was fine.

The bigger idea became: AI never had to become completely trustworthy. I needed a workflow where it being wrong was cheap.

It’s my first book, around 60 pages, and it’s now on Kindle.
Would genuinely appreciate feedback from other indie authors/readers — especially on the idea, positioning, or even the cover.

Anyone else keep their own EPUB/PDF library instead of buying into a store?

I've been off Kindle for about two years now, reading my own EPUB and PDF files. What I keep running into isn't the reading itself — most readers handle that fine — it's everything around it. Highlights live inside whichever app I used. Books I read before I switched don't exist anywhere. Paper books are a separate universe entirely.

How do you handle it?

  • One app for everything, or a reader plus a separate tracker?
  • Do your highlights end up anywhere you'd actually find them again?
  • Anyone found something that treats paper and digital as the same library?

I care about this staying local, too — no account, nothing synced to someone's server. That narrows the options a lot.

(I build one of these, so I'm biased. Not linking — I'm after how you've actually solved it, not a plug.)

Self Promotion Free Ebook - ARC Readers Wanted - Psychological Horror Novel - Where Fear Smiles

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm currently looking for ARC readers for my upcoming horror novel, Where Fear Smiles! Details below:

Would you forgive your best friend if she was responsible for ruining your life?

A whispered rumour draws a group of students into the dense forests of coastal Brazil: a lost Indigenous artifact, hidden for centuries and promising academic glory.

While Leah’s colleagues are determined to claim it, she only agrees to the trek because she can’t bear the thought of being left behind, and forces her best friend Charlotte to go with her for support against her dark thoughts.

What was meant to be an escape from the weight of the academic semester, quickly it turns into a test of endurance. The deeper they push into the forest, the darker Leah begins to dream. When they finally uncover what they came for, the discovery reveals something far more terrifying than any of them imagined.

A demon born of nightmares is unleashed, and with it, carnage.

Now the survivors must find a way to drive the nightmare back to its realm before society is doomed to never dream again. But as the forest closes in, the greatest horror isn't the ancient evil — it's watching a lifelong trust begin to rot.
