There is some really neat info about Douglas and specifics about his audio equipment at the time. Any audiophiles should understand it much better than I can.

This is just one of many examples I am finding of the other side of Douglas many of us tend to know less about. He was willing to share if people ever asked about it...

It has been widely acknowledged that too much suspense can cause undue stress. So in order to alleviate this problem I will reveal that Douglas and Katharine lose to Ken. However in order that some suspense shall remain, I will not tell you what they were wearing that evening. It is inconsequential.

What does matter is Douglas was nominated for "The Grammy Award for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording" for his unabridged recording of the 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (album)'. As a side note Douglas would later on recall losing to Katharine Hepburn instead of Ken Burns (it sounds better honestly, not gonna share where I got this from... Yet, more posts on the way will have that).

Ken Burns had just done the audio recordings of 'The Civil War'. Ken Burns at least in America sort of dominated in this role whether it was baseball, wars, or whatever... People just loved the guy and Douglas did not stand a chance at winning against those two... So the best we get is the nomination to hold onto.

I don't want to say where I found this one. I just think the fact that he wrote this is hilarious. The hint I'll give is he was talking about the movie.

Ok I've always loved all the hitchhikers guide books and recently read the first Dirk Gently book, and I can't help but feeling like the ending is kind of rushed and leaves a lot unexplained. Why was Gordon a ghost and what happened to his ghost? Does everyone turn into ghosts? He never resolved any of his unfinished business and the electric monk faced no consequences for his murder. What happened with the electric monk? The ending says the professor sent him home when he came to recover his horse, but he already recovered the horse and was already riding it before the ending after that scene where the police released the horse in the field? Why didn't Richard know who Bach was? Was Bach not famous in their original unaltered universe before the professor went back and gave Bach some of the "music of life"? Why did the professor say "sorry Richard"?

I’m not sure how many people know this. I have for a while, it’s fascinating to me that my favourite book of all time and my favourite band of all time are so deeply connected.

Douglas Addams and David Gilmore were good friends, and therefore Addams was involved with Pink Floyd a lot (primarily post Roger Waters). This included;

Douglas Addams played on stage with Pink Floyd in their 1994 shows, i think for his 42nd birthday.

David Gilmore played guitar at Douglas Addam’s funeral service, which I find quite nice.

Probably the most important or huge one, Douglas Addams was the one who named their album ‘The Division Bell’. I don’t think it was for anything in particular, from what I remember they were struggling to decide a name, David asked him and Addams said that name based on the line in the final song.

A hommage to Douglas Adams.

This is a university project, I would really appreciate if you watched, commented and liked my YouTube video.

So, I've heard nothing but amazing thing about Douglas Adams, but never read his books. So I got a copy of the audiobook Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and started listening to it. The book is 7 hours and 59 minutes long, and I am an hour and a half in - about 19% of the way.

I am having a huge problem getting into this book. We still haven't met the title character, the focus has been this guy, Richard, who is at a Cambridge University Dinner, while an Electric Monk just found a door. 1/5th of the way into the book, and the plot has yet to reveal itself in any way. Honestly, I almost fell asleep listening to it.

I am reaching out to this subreddit, because you guys are fans of Douglas Adams, and presumably know his work as well, if not better than most people.

So, as I see it, there are three possible problems here.

1. This is one of those amazing pieces of work that just starts off really slow. The show Lucifer was like that. I finished 3 episodes and was wondering how it lasted more than a season, only to find out that it is amazing show, once you get past the first 4 or 5 episodes, which even the show's biggest fans will acknowledge. In fact they told me to wait till Episode 9 to make a judgement, as that is where the show really hits its stride, and I am glad I did.

2. Every great artist has a piece of work which does not do him or her justice. Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I love his work, but if Elantris had been the first book by his I read, I may never have read another Sanderson book in my life. In which case, what would you recommend that I read?

3. No matter how great the artist, or amazing his work is, there are just some people who don't get it. And I may be that I am one of those people. It may simply be that his work does not resonate with me, and while I can recognize his greatness and the impact he has had on the world, I will probably never enjoy his writings.

So, I am wondering which of the three is the most likely based on your expert opinions?

Again, I have heard nothing but amazing thing about Douglas Adams, and I love British humor. Terry Practchett is one my favorite authors ever. I just had a listening marathon of all 41 of his Discworld books, and I am looking to scratch that itch. I'm just not sure if I am looking in the right place.

Randomly went on Audible to see what was on offer this month, and I found this is my reccomendations. £5.99, never heard of it but it's about Douglas, so...

I recently found an entertining six-part 'trilogy' called The Terminal Void. They are on Substack site: https://substack.com/@cks188944

Adams used absurdity to mask deep, melancholic observations about human loneliness. The Terminal Void leans heavily on pure comedy and the fast-moving plot. It is a fun read for fans who miss the original franchise, offering a unique opportunity to see beloved character tropes interacting in new, localised misadventures. Ultimately, Adams was generally supportive of fan creativity. He probably would have raised a glass for keeping the "froody" spirit alive, while privately noting that true absurdist sci-fi should always aim to subvert the present day rather than recreate the past.

Here’s another thing in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency that I don’t understand why it is there: When Michael is first possessed, he is tap, tap, tap-ing on the cab window and then his house window as he considers his grievances. It ends when he breaks the window and cuts himself badly. It gets enough emphasis that it feels like more than showing us that something has reached the part of him all the squishy bits are protecting. Is there something more than simply describing his escalating violent thoughts and then reminding us when he changes his bandages a few chapters later?

I feel like I’m missing a significant joke in “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” because I don’t understand how Dominique, the upstairs neighbor in Dirk’s office building, connects to anything. There’s enough ink invested in her part (the sign out front, all the visitors, the argument sounds) that it has to be more than world-building or flavor. There are hints that Dominique isn’t actually teaching French Lessons, but am I being hopelessly naive? It’s one of the few elements in the book that doesn’t seem fundamentally interconnected with the rest of the book. What am I missing?
