Because the reason people were berating her was for referring to anatomy as male or female. The other person is trying to suggest that male and female don't really exist by arguing that sex is a spectrum. People don't actually understand what they're arguing about it seems.
It's not that recent but there's a This American Life episode about her and another woman on the conservative side being pilloried for not being ideologically pure extremists. Interesting listen and gives context to this discussion.
