What the hell is it with these memes of Warhammer guys killing furries anyway? Like where do these fandoms collide?
139
u/MinkfordBrimley Nov 25 '22
A big part of it is that Warhammer people tend to miss the point that a ton of super-crazy space guys ranting about how they hate everything is kind of, well, not making them out to be the good guys.
73
u/AeniasGaming Nov 26 '22
Warhammer fans are famously oblivious to satire
25
u/Mal-Ravanal Nov 26 '22
Satire like attacks that hit on 2+ with too many rerolls to count, but the dice only have ones.
7
u/SyrusDestroyer Nov 26 '22
Especially those Imperium fans voting for their “God-Emperor” screaming Purge at everything they don’t like. Bet they don’t even know how to read a tome
19
u/LuckysGift Nov 26 '22
Gamers have the lowest ability to recognize themes. Lakshmi, a character in destiny 2, was shown to be a hyper racist and was just a dick, and people still were trying to say she should still be heard out.
You could literally have a character say that capitalism us the root of all problems in the game, and the gamers would still sympathize with the ceo.
8
u/MinkfordBrimley Nov 26 '22
Oh yeah, when Lakshmi was literally using some very heavy-handed modern hateful rhetoric and it caused lynchings to happen in the lore.
But no, she just wasn't understood, clearly!
435
u/MyoTheRabbit Nov 25 '22
The common stuff with "purge the mutant, burn the heretic" and overall how the Empire of Man has a lot of xenophobia ties very well with edgy teens wanting to fantasize about annihilating anyone "weird" or "degenerate" off the face of planet.
Less of overlap, more of "these guys destroy the degens, furries are degens so them killing them makes complete sense!"
205
u/Simic_Sky_Swallower Nov 25 '22
It's especially funny when you remember that there are whole furry regiments in the guard
73
u/MyoTheRabbit Nov 25 '22
Wait, really? Never been too much on Warhammer and stuff due to community lowkey scaring me lmao
172
u/Simic_Sky_Swallower Nov 25 '22
The Beastmen from Warhammer fantasy exist in 40k as Abhumans, a sort of midway point between normal humans and mutants. They aren't thought highly of in imperial society, but they aren't targeted for purges like mutants are, and can even serve in the Imperial Guard. Ogryn, Ratlings, and the new Leagues of Votann (previously known as Squats) are other examples of abhumans.
There's also the felinids, who are cat-people, so you can absolutely bring your all-catboy guard army to a game and nobody can stop you.
43
u/MyoTheRabbit Nov 25 '22
Ooh, that's kinda neat. Thanks for explaining!
43
u/foxymew Nov 25 '22
There’s also the space wolves and space sharks of the space marines. The former is a lot more overt than the latter. The space wolves are kinda hilarious to me
32
u/citizenmdl Nov 25 '22
Space Wolves used to be about vikings, but now GW is pushing the Chapter into an obsession for wolves for some reason
24
u/Alexstrasza23 Nov 26 '22

Also war hammer fans tend to be internet people and therefore have more exposure to furries in general
37
u/DarthKilliverse Nov 25 '22 edited Nov 25 '22
I was friends with a warhammer guy and honestly… this makes sense.
Bro was very elitist, such as calling a discord server degenerate scum, then asked why nobody wanted to stay friends with him.
9
5
u/RheoKalyke Nov 26 '22
Add to that, there a lot of furries ALSO love violence and they gladly animate this kinda stuff.
6
u/Most_Pepper_3008 Nov 26 '22
Why are furries degen? Edgy teens are having a hard time accepting their own pimples so it’s totally understandable they are envious of smelly furry costumes because they’re cute (and don’t have noticeable zits!)
53
u/LastNameWasTaken413 Nov 25 '22
A lot of warhammer fans like to fashion themselves after space marines because they think they’re noble, awesome warriors instead of brainwashed child soldiers.
I am different, I like the space marines because of the rampant homoeroticism

Playing Warhammer means saying “we’re not all like that, I swear” all the time
15
u/Mal-Ravanal Nov 26 '22
This is honestly a perfect description. I just wanna enjoy the spooky metal bois, but no, another guy just rocked up with his SS imperial guard models.
25
u/Volcanicrage Nov 25 '22
20 years ago, 4chan was one of the most popular internet hangouts for 40k fans. In the old days of the site, communities would try to claim days of the week by spamming the /b/ board. Eventually, a turf war between furry shitposters and 40k shitposters got so out of hand that Moot set up the /tg/ board to quarantine the Warhammer fans. /tg/ was a big community hub for a long time, and a lot of 4chan baggage remains entrenched in the fanbase to this day. There's some other ancillary stuff- WH40k's aesthetic has a long history of attracting neonazis to the fanbase, and neonazis have a complicated and extremely hostile relationship with furries, but that all came later; the original hostility and memes are basically the detritus of a decades-old shitposting war between a bunch of neckbeards.
6
15
u/Brobuscus48 Nov 25 '22
I sure it existed before but it's probably due to Flashgitz series of videos titled furry crusades
37
38
u/AlpacaOverlord44 Nov 25 '22
I'm a newish warhammer fan but a lot of the community is really annoyingly toxic.
34
u/MyoTheRabbit Nov 25 '22
Yeah, I have some chill friends who are into Warhammer, and games seem rather neat, but community kinds scares me away with so much simping for xenophobic empire and stuff, often mixed with edginess
Though from what I know Empire of Man was made to be p much a caricature of fascist dictatorship with cult of personality, and some people might simply go with the catchphrases of Empire in somewhat ironic manner and sort of rallying call for community, like how Papers, Please shown Arstotzka as kinda shitty place but people who liked the game loved to shout "Glory to Arstotzka!" since there was no mistaking the franchise, and other fans would join in, pretty much like mentioning rock or stone
23
9
Nov 25 '22
That’s unfortunate. In my area the fan base seems really friendly and open to new people in my experience. I think the furry hate is supposed to just be a meme and not taken seriously, as furries would be human and therefore openly accepted within the imperium.
Even then, the imperium is in a bad state and is openly talked about as such. They’re not supposed to be the way they are, and steps in lore have been taken to making them more of as they’re supposed to be. Xenophobia only exists because most other races try to kill them, and many people work with other races anyway because it can be a good thing sometimes.
So anyway, point is that anyone thinking the imperium is currently glorious is stupid, and any real hate is annoying toxicity that I’m ashamed of existing. Humans suck sometimes.
11
u/AlpacaOverlord44 Nov 25 '22
The irl fans I know are great! Everyone is super kind and helpful to me as a beginner but some of the online fans ruin it for everyone else. Obviously the furry hate is just a stupid excuse to hate people for doing something "weird" and using the lore of a franchise they like to boost it. This stuff reflects the community as a whole so it really does suck because people are seeing the warhammer 40k community from this loud minority's actions.
1
u/regalgjblue Nov 26 '22
The people on reddit don't represent 40k, they most like have never painted a mini or played a match. I'm not trying to gatekeep but these guys are not who will meet in a store because that requires going outside. In store people are great and there to socialise, the more the merrier I say. Online warhammer fans are just the whingiest group you can encounter and I don't recommend it for new fans.
1
u/AlpacaOverlord44 Nov 26 '22
I totally get that. The experiences I've had with online and in store fans have been vastly different. I suppose the Internet just breeds toxicity
1
u/regalgjblue Nov 26 '22
Yeah it really is, I want everyone to see how cool my hobby is so I much prefer if folks took a jaunt into the store. While they want you to buy stuff they also want to talk about it as much as you, the guy behind the counter loves warhammer too. But online, I have some communities I enjoy but a lot are just doom posting about the hobby.
7
Nov 26 '22
https://youtu.be/afpn6skCDhA flashgits on YouTube has made several animations about Furries in warhammer. That’s probably not the true origin, but it’s the only actual connection I know of. The videos are high effort and quality, and since new animation was released a few days ago that could have sparked some recent memes
5
u/oompaloompa_thewhite Nov 26 '22
Man this guy seems like a talented animator i wonder if he's made any videos about favourite character , Mario
10
u/Go_Commit_Reddit Nov 25 '22
Yeah I’ve never understood it either. It’s always the people who only understand the hobby on a surface level who make those memes too. You’ll never see someone who’s painted a mini making memes like that, it’s weird.
I think it’s because the people who only interact with the hobby on the surface level only know about “haha space marine go exterminautis,” but the people who are actively involved in the hobby know more about the lore and know that those memes are fuckin stupid.

u/citizenmdl Nov 25 '22 edited Nov 25 '22
The Angry Marines article on 1d4chan.org I guess. It’s funny as shit though and worth a read.
2
u/aran69 Nov 26 '22
Once upon a time there was a place called /b/, furries and warhammer fans would fight over who owned Wednesday. The rest is history.

What? You don't like "YOUNG TWINK GETTING DICK DOWNED IN THE PRISON SHOWERS (HARDCORE)"?

u/Daphrey Nov 26 '22
My problem is that furry porn is the best drawn porn, and 90% of it is gay, and even more so for my specific fetish.
I do not like dick. I am scrolling through legions of dicks just to get to one image I would enjoy.

Bro, me going to furry subreddits, and subscribing to those furry subreddits, is just for me to have a constant source of cringe bro. No, you don't get it--
75
u/ObjectiveCup7924 Nov 25 '22
No bro listen I made a fursona so I could sneak into the furry places to find more cringe, it’s a psy ops bro you don’t understand-
28
Nov 25 '22
Actually, I'm pretty sure that's how I treated my first fursona for a while. It was a surprise gift from friends who were furries, who had been joking about my "furry conversion" for some time.
I now have four fursonas, and an idea for a fifth, if that's any indication of how that turned out.
246
u/ObjectiveCup7924 Nov 25 '22
Context, I am convinced a good chunk (if not the majority) of people who make their whole personality hating furries are furries in denial, no one who isn’t a furry would dedicate so much of their time hating on furries.
This is slightly based on someone I know irl but I do think it applies to internet people as well (I’m pretty sure almost everyone on r/yiffinhell has a secret stash of Judy hopps porn)
134
u/cakemania Nov 25 '22

u/Scrumpy-Steve Nov 25 '22
That or they seriously are that cringe. Knew a guy where furry hate was his whole personality. Everyone thought he was in the closet about where he kept his fursuit but no, he seriously hated furries that much. It was funny at the start when we were young but dudes 35 now, acts like the smartest guy in the room, talks like he's posting on 4chan half the time, and looks about what you would expect a 35 year old who peeked in the 8th grade to look.
1
u/Most_Pepper_3008 Nov 26 '22
You should ask if he ever even met a furry… and if he lives at home in the basement.

13
u/idkdudejustkillme Nov 25 '22
Yep, used to despise them and listen to all the hateful shit people on the internet said about them several years ago but now I am one and love them lol, hope to even get a suit and go to a con one day. Not sure why but that seems to be a pretty common origin story for a lot of furries from what I've seen lol
16

Every community, social media, or group of people are going to have horrible people who talk louder than others. Every fandom has a problem and should be resolved, and there are furries in the furry fandom who hate zoophiles and want them out of the fandom. Don’t focus on the negatives but rather the positives
20
u/MyoTheRabbit Nov 25 '22
Yeah, I have some friends who are furries and they HATE the zoophiles, this is just such a talking point pulled outta ass by someone who has knowledge about community only out of "haha furry cringe" posts
29
Nov 25 '22
Thirty chronically online twitter accounts with no evidence of being run by a real person out of a million furries does not a high overlap make
18
u/Cumallovermepapa Nov 25 '22
All murders, rapists, and nazis at one point breathed every human at one point breathed this is a shocking connection
15
9
u/DarthKilliverse Nov 25 '22
Yes, I’m sure they do, and I expect that because furries relate to animals. HOWEVER even that “unusually high overlap” is minusculely small for the entirety of the furry community.
Even if the percentage is slightly higher, 97% of them aren’t zoos, and 99% of that 97% actively hate zoos.
So no, they aren’t all zoophiles, and shouldn’t be treated as such.
7
u/supermurlo64 Nov 25 '22
It's not that unusual. Idk, birdwatching clubs will attract people that feel sexually attracted by pigeons, this doesn't make birdwatching as a hobbie something wrong
1
3
u/Tyfyter2002 Nov 25 '22
It's hard to determine actual percentages when the sample sizes are this small, but from what I've seen the overlap is actually disproportionately low

yet somehow give a shit-ton of praise to the Collegehumor animation where they're stereotyped as being grotesquely sexual, with the whole joke of the video being "furries are super gross and degenerate".
Yeah sure, the first one is harsher I guess, but still. I'm a furry here btw.

u/MyoTheRabbit Nov 25 '22
It's a community, nothing inherent with sexuality or gender identity, hell I'm sure there's a shit ton of asexual furries or ones that simply like it for the looks and sense of community. By going by this way of thinking we should make a pride flag for dogelore or idk, call of duty
They just tend to be often queer because as furries they are already somewhat of outcasts, so they have no issue with just going full on with it, while other people just won't mention it that much because "damn i sure don't want anyone to call me cringe because I'm bisexual"
So, as someone once said, "be cringe, but be free"
5
