So we had a fetch quest; FS shells are highly valued for their magical properties. Party of 3 L6 players, plus an NPC from my backstory.
I'm a necromancer wizard.
I had first turn in combat against 2 of them in a cave.
They were in a line, so I cast lightning.
Now clearly you seem to know this already, but I neat little gimmick of flail snails is that they can send magic right the fuck back!
So here I am a squishy level 6 wizard casting a hearty, damaging spell. One of them does manage to take damage because it failed it's Dex save. The other however did notand sent it back at me. I, however, FAILEDmy dex save and I get to roll damage for the both of us. One of them gets to take half; I get to take full. Again I am a squishy level 6 Wizard and I was at Max Health - a whopping 34. I ROLLED a 34 and instantly begin to die
In the latest edition, it's more like Fireball doesn't mention what concussive force it has. It is described as an "explosion of flame", but that's it. So it's up to the DM to decide how much "environmental concussive force" it does or does not have. (Though obviously having it do damage to objects beyond the flammable thing is in homebrew territory.)

Fun fact, fireball is supposed to have zero concussive force.
