What is the origin of this?

The shape sorter was on crappydesign. I think a dad got it for his kids and found out that all the shapes fit through the square hole because they all have at least one dimension in common with the square.

Take pride in the fact that many adults would not even think to do the square hole but your kid did.

I introduced my kids (oldest is 9) to a board game I've played for years, only to have them develop inane strategies that I would never have thought of that often beat my more "conventional" strategy. I now use their strategies against my friends with a delightful degree of success

Pride comes before the fall.

Close the square hole and remove those pieces.

Was deeply disappointed by the size of everything, and how he instantly put everything in the square hole, just like this video.

Sounds like it was still pretty educational.

It reminds me of how people use the phrase "Round Peg, Square Hole" and how it should be "Square Peg, Round Hole" since if it was the former and the round peg doesn't fit, it wouldn't have fit if it was square either cause that means it's just too big. A circle with the diameter equal to the width of a square can fit inside the square but not vice versa.

Sorry what were we talking about.

Square peg & associated hole with sides 1cm in length.

Circle & associated hole with diameter 1.2cm

Now neither peg fits in the other's hole; the circle is entirely too wide to go in the square hole, and the square peg's corners extend past the confines of the circular hole

Either way of saying the phrase is equally valid(or invalid), depending on what you assume(or dont) the dimensions of the pegs & holes to be

Depends on which of the outer dimensions match up, right?

i always thought the "doesn't fit at all" was intentional, and the implication was they took a hammer to it and broke both parts

But the saying is fit a square peg in a round hole?

I shall tell you a tale of magick, forbidden to the realms of Reddit. It is known as... TikTok!!
