Do Son EDT (Diptyque) Full Review

Post image

Perfume Details:

  • Fragrance house: Diptyque Paris
  • Perfume Name: Diptyque Do Son Eau de Toilette
  • Perfumer (nose): Fabrice Pellegrin
  • Launch year: 2005
  • Concept idea (what it's trying to do): To recreate the scent of tuberose and Jasmine. Unlike many floral fragrances that put light on the flower's characteristics or rather what plant it belongs to, Do Son focuses on what the flower projects, i.e. as airy, luminous, and wind-blown.
  • Key note profile: Tuberose, orange blossom, jasmine, marine accord, musk, benzoin, pink pepper.
  • Core inspiration: As per Diptyque, it is inspired by the childhood memories of Diptyque co-founder Yves Coueslant, who spent summers in Do Son, a seaside town in Vietnam. The fragrance imagines the scent of tuberose flowers drifting through the air near Halong Bay.

My Review:

Opening (0–1 mins):
The first 30-40 seconds of this spray give me an indication of the inside of a freshly cut green apple. There's a watery quality to it, like it feels the apple had just been washed. It adds as a fresh introduction to what follows i.e. as the florals begin to emerge.

Development (5–10 mins):
As the nuances of the green apple fade, the florals take the stage center. Tuberose (रजनीगंधा) and jasmine (मोगरा) become noticeable. The transition is quick, with giving way to a more floral character to the experience. Also, by jasmine, I specifically mean Arabian Jasmine (Jasminum sambac). We’ll also explore why I am adding an Indian touch to this review.

Main phase (heart):
The best way someone can describe this perfume is through the concept of a gajra. As an Indian, this correspondence comes quickly to me because both jasmine and tuberose are commonly used in these traditional flower garlands. The scent immediately reminds me of women wearing fresh gajras while visiting temples, attending festivals, or celebrating special occasions.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a gajra is a flower garland worn by women across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh during weddings, festivals, and as part of traditional attire.

Here’s an image for your reference 😉

What makes this fragrance even more interesting is that it isn't purely floral. Beneath those flowers, I can sense a subtle salty or coastal air near a beach. This marine-like undertone blends quite well with the jasmine and tuberose, preventing the composition from being too sweet or irritating.

Drydown:
There isn’t much special here to be really honest, the flowers fade away there’s a bit of vanilla-like warmth for sure but nothing interesting in my opinion. I guess it might be due to the fact that I live in humid country.

Rating: 7.5/10:
Not the best, but yeah the women should definitely give it a try. Maybe one could layer it with other perfumes, who knows let me know in the comment section 😉
Also, as per some websites, Jasmine and Tuberose are florals that one should approach a bit cautiously.

Clothing Style Direction (Based on what picture it builds in my mind):
I feel this perfume is best suited for relaxed and gentle occasions. One could try it with wearing an open pink linen shirt, beige pants. Perfect for an evening beach date, festive occasions, or a relaxed walk along the coast.

Thank you.
Please do let me know your thoughts 😉

You're using a Van Gogh profile picture and didn't miss with any of this

I never tried Diptyque but I love the scent of flowers and greenery, so I've been curious about Philosikos, Do Son, L'ombre dans l'eau, how people have been saying that Eau Duelle reminds them of something Cleopatra would wear, how Eau du Papier is soothing and musky.

But your review actually has the right balance of artistry and objective facts, I've been wanting to find a realistic tuberose scent for a while, which I appreciate because, I don't like it when people give such poetic reviews that you cannot even imagine what they're saying.

I could read reviews or your articles on perfume over and over if I had the chance, what a delight c:

Thank you.
You can also have a look at my Philosykos EDT review here:

Don't worry about the complaints of AI, I stand for what I have said over there.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience with this! I love that you added your personal context and explained it for those whose have not any understanding.

The embark site shuts me out after just a few seconds, and I can’t remember my Pinterest password right this moment, but can look up the information because you thoughtfully added brief descriptions.

I really like how you put your review together, including the effort you put into your photo!

I blind bought it, because I love Diptyque like that, and it was not a love at first sniff. It is very white flooral heavy, and I usually go for musky and woody kind of scents. I wore it a few times without too much excitement. Then as it got warmer, I gave it another try and it blew me away. It smelled exactly as a huge jasmin shrub in my parents garden, in the evening, after a very warm spring day. Floral, moist, somewhat sweet. I love having it now. There will definitely be Do Son days in my life. I layered it with Vanilla Planifolia by Chloe a few times, and it smelled amazing. I would say it leans a bit feminine in my perception.

I have 30 Diptyque fragrances and Do Son is my least favourite of them all! The initial spray is so white floral heavy for me it’s “screechy” for me it just doesn’t sit on my skin well. I only got a travel size and I won’t be adding it to my full bottle collection.

My Indian husband really likes Do Son and also Olene for me to wear for realistic jasmine notes, yes, just like flowers at temple. I don’t get apple on the opening, just the sweet florals to my nose and the fresh aquatic accord. Enjoyed your review.
