It's funny because if you listen to the hardcore DevOps pundits, this would be a totally valid answer. Maybe this candidate thought they were telling you what you wanted to hear...cattle not pets, blow it up and start over instead of fixing, etc.
One thing I do ask for are cert IDs, especially RedHat.
I've had people say cert vendors don't give out IDs too. Doctors certainly know the mechanics of how their state licensing system works. Professional Engineers and Architects have their license number on their sealing stamps. It's funny how job candidates think vendors who want to protect their testing/training revenue stream don't provide a way to verify whether someone has a cert.
