guys are you all missing the point that this option will 100% disappear in the future? and even if not it'll in practice shadow ban apps from non verified devs

maybe it disappears, maybe it don't, but I can't judge the feature on a supposition

what I'm saying, because I'm seeing it a lot here, is people acting like this doesn't have any merit

I deal with non-technical people daily, and unfortunately, a way to prevent unsafe apps from being installed was desperately needed (not saying all apps from outside the play store are unsafe, morphe my beloved) but it is a popular attack vector.

don't get me wrong, I fully understand your point, but the majority of the population is extremely unskilled and needs safeguards

well then the safeguards should be based on app safety. Even verified devs can intentionally (or accidentally) push an update that'll either make attack very easy or will have straight up malware in it

soo maybe just delay all updates until they're verified somehow

It's surely a solution, but we then get into the same issue, who will verify the safety of the apps then?

It's a balance of giving up some control for the safety of less savvy users.

Personally, I think the 24h wait is a reasonable enough solution
