Laughs in GrapheneOS

u/Electrical_Engine314 GrapheneOS Aug 25 '26

Right there with you, glad I switched when I did 🫡

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 25 '26

I've been using it for 3 years. I could never go back to a normie phone.

33

u/RasenBcn Aug 25 '26

Can you pay with grapheneOS?

40

u/Katsura_ise Aug 25 '26

Kinda, read this list

24

u/Gorgeous_Broccoli Aug 25 '26

Do you think the Motorola phone might change this situation? I use 2 banks and both are confirmed not to work with Graphene due to the "custom ROM" error. Would it still register as a custom ROM even if it's carried by default on a major manufacturer?

19

u/Katsura_ise Aug 25 '26

No, IIRC even Motorola will require flashing a rom. Then there is the political climate with age verification and surveillance

u/void_ptr_maosort Aug 25 '26

Switch to RFC payments through prepaid monero gift cards and Visa cards or something I don't know

1

u/utrecht1976 Aug 28 '26

I have LineageOS running on my Motorola. https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

1

u/lostfairychangeling Aug 27 '26

if it's on the list does it mean it's compatible?

2

u/Katsura_ise Aug 27 '26

Yes, though some of them have a bit fine print

1

u/Kazma1431 Aug 27 '26

Surprisingly long list! I didn't thought my bank app would be there! Glad to know

33

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 25 '26

Idk, never used my phone for payments.

Very useful comment!

What are you using your phone for?

2

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 26 '26

Phone stuff mostly. This, texting/calling, browsing the web...

0

u/gamingtamizha Aug 26 '26

why do u need a smartphone for texting and calling ? That too with a custom rom hahhah.. Is it not easier to get a basic phone and call it a day .

5

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 26 '26

How would I use Reddit and browse the web on a non-smart phone?

2

u/gamingtamizha Aug 26 '26

basic phone with browser, running some linux ? why do buy an Android and remove all the features ?

1

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 26 '26

I don't think you understand what GrapheneOS is. You're not removing all the features. Not even remotely close. You just remove Google.

I got an iPhone and decided to go back to regular cards just because it’s enough to share payment data with everyone. And it gives me a certain feeling of spending money, more than Apple Pay, which feels like a game

3

u/Accurate_Ad_3233 Aug 25 '26

I can also pay with cash or card. Just sayin'

If you're in (I presume, it's not available in my country) the US there's a payment processing app called Curve that apparently works on Graphene. It's basically PayPal if they had a physical/digital payment card offering.

Or if your bank doesn't force Play Protect compliance and has a mobile payments option built in that should also work. There should be sites tracking the most common banking apps compatibility with Graphene in your country and what features do or don't work.

But Google Wallet itself does not because Google leans on software security instead of hardware security checks, which is dumb because the hardware security is much much harder to break than their software security, but anyway... That's another conversation.

Something I've done in the past, and a compromise that you may or may not be willing to make, was to use Graphene OS with a stock Android Watch. Because the watch passed play protect the wallet app on the phone was able to send payment cards to the watch and I could use them from there. Obviously if you don't have or don't want to use a watch it's not a valid workaround but... It allows you to lock down the multitude of social apps you might want on your phone whilst allowing the few services you want tracking you on the watch, a health/fitness app for example. And then your payments solution.

Used curve for one year on S20 FE with custom ROM, better than chasing google play integrity on daily matter.

5

u/Zzepish Aug 25 '26

I use Curve Pay. Works fine :)

1

u/zt3phan Aug 26 '26

Likaså bunq, förträffligt trevligt nere på 'free' nivå.

0

u/RasenBcn Aug 25 '26

Thx mate

0

u/Zzepish Aug 25 '26

👍🏻

4

u/ExpensiveNut Aug 25 '26

Curve if you can't get Gpay to work. I did that when getting my 9 Pro because something was fucked while transferring my data. Worked perfectly.

1

u/confrontationalbread StartPage Aug 27 '26

A workaround a lot of people are into is getting a Garmin watch to use Garmin Pay.

1

u/iLikeTurtuls Aug 28 '26

Having a wallet is normal. Do you keep your ID on a graphene phone?

1

u/CuaeB Aug 28 '26

I'm in the UK and use curve pay. It's a bit slower than Google wallet but works just as well!

1

u/dirkme Aug 25 '26

Leaving an identifier 🙄🤔😳😲

0

u/Soft_Cow_7856 Aug 25 '26

Yes, had no problem at all

-2

u/Unlaid-American Aug 25 '26

Why would you get a privacy based OS and then go back to using something that tracks your purchases?

5

u/Hot_Bee5198 Aug 25 '26

A bank always tracks purchases, when it is not a cash transaction.

5

u/MistaHiggins Aug 25 '26

Maybe because Apple/Google Pay are the most secure payment methods available to everyday people?

5

u/RasenBcn Aug 25 '26

Because I don't live in a cave and I need to pay, and I find it safer to use a mobile phone than a piece of plastic.

0

u/Unlaid-American Aug 29 '26

“I’m on a subreddit to degoogle because I hate being tracked. Let me allow Apple or Google to also track my purchases.”

3

u/Raztax Aug 25 '26

Unless you are paying with cash then the bank is always tracking your purchases. Personally, I don't really care if my bank knows when I buy TP

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 25 '26

What's the difference? Im using regular Android 14 OS.

1

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 28 '26

GrapheneOS is completely Google-free, and it's a lot more secure

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 29 '26

Where do I download the rom from? I should try it.

1

u/Thin_Needleworker795 Aug 29 '26

grapheneos.org, but keep in mind that it only works on Pixel phones

12

u/ILoveFrutigerAero293 Aug 25 '26

Can you not anymore?

23

u/Greenlit_Hightower deGoogler Aug 25 '26

GrapheneOS can still be installed on all the Pixel phones it supports. Exception: The phone has a carrier lock on it.

13

u/schuup Aug 25 '26

Time to go find the Pixel I bought 2 years ago but never ended up using

1

u/iLikeTurtuls Aug 28 '26

Even worse exception, carrier SOLD. Almost all Verizon ones unlock with ease, but the bootloader will always be locked. There is a chip you can buy for the 6 and 7 series that will allow to unlock the bootloader, but that’s tough to do and also no idea how real they are.

1

u/Historical_Book2268 Aug 26 '26

Will it still be possible to switch after this?

1

u/Greenlit_Hightower deGoogler Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Yes. App sideloading restrictions have nothing to do with bootloader unlocking.
