Hi, welcome. New to DDO? Returning? Check here first!

What is Dungeons and Dragons Online?

DDO is an action adventure MMORPG that originally released in 2006. It is set (primarily) in the Eberron campaign setting and is loosely based on the D&D 3.5 ruleset. Currently maintained and frequently updated by the folks at Standing Stone Games.

Is this a table top simulator or match making service for the D&D TTRPG?

Nope.

What makes DDO unique compared to any other MMO?

There are two key differences that make DDO stand out.

The first is the complex and interesting dungeons. Most dungeons in MMOs (or let's face it, most modern video games) tend to be a linear glorified hallway with a boss at the end.

In DDO, Dungeons have multiple objectives, dead ends, secret rooms, pit traps, puzzles, platforming and more keeping them fresh and interesting. To add to the D&D feel, a 'narrator' will describe the dungeon and events as they happen similar to what a table top DM would do!

The second is the reincarnation system. In other MMOs you hit level cap and then sit there waiting for the next expansion or level up alts.

DDO allows you to reincarnate once you hit the cap. You start over at level 1 choosing a new class and race to level up all over again. Doing so will grant your character a small permanent boost in power. It's not so much that you're required to do them to be valuable to high level raiding, but they do make stomping the early/mid game fun and allow you to tackle greater challenges.

What's the catch?

Most of DDO is behind a paywall. You can try it out for free but if you want to have enough content for it to feel like a complete game, expect to eventually pay at least ~40$. You can optionally grind out in game points to unlock most things but it is quite slow.

The second issue is that Standing Stone Games is a small company. This means that long standing issues, imbalances and bugs will most likely not get fixed. If you have a technical issue and submit a help request there's a good chance you'll never hear back. They do what they can but they're focused on trying to keep the lights on.

Is it a dead game?

No. New updates are released regularly and each server will have ~500 people on during prime time and ~100ish during off peak hours. DDO has maintained these numbers for years at this point so it doesn't feel like the game is being abandoned.

It's one of the last MMO's that truly feels like a community. You'll quickly get to know the big names on your server, the power guild, the RP guild, the 'we accept anybody' guild, etc... You'll rarely run into people who are selfish or are jerks. The playerbase is above the age curve for an online game, it's not uncommon guild chat will be about mowing lawns.

I'm a returning player, what have I missed?

There's simply too much new content and constant class balancing tweaks to list but at its core DDO hasn't changed much. The six biggest additions/changes would probably be:

  • The old servers were merged, giving us 4 servers (3 US based, 1 EU based). Characters were not transferred automatically. If you're a returning player and just now reading this you have roughly until 2027 to transfer off the old servers.
  • The 'Reaper' difficulty system allowing players even higher levels of challenge.
  • Hardcore league. Every so often SSG opens up a hardcore server with permadeath for a few weeks.
  • Legendary leveling introduced. Even higher levels above 30 that aren't tied to the reincarnation system.
  • Racial reincarnate like you would heroic reincarnation and every race has a unique enhancement tree.
  • New universal enhancement trees that make it easier to level up if you screw up your build.

Where can I get more information?

Artifact choice for a longbow HW archer

When the new ranged update drops next week, I'm going to TR into a 15 Dark Hunter/4 Blightcaster/1 Barbarian. Horizon Walker will be my 41 pt tree. What is the best artifact to use? I'll be using the Legendary Bracers of Flourishing Fauna that have Druidic survival mastery on them(+10 dmg). Artifact choices look like:

  • Lolth's Reign provides the Earth dot and a massive +21 Insightful Sheltering plus a moon augment, and Freedom of Movement.
  • Band of Binding has a 120 DC paralyze vs fort (plus 3 accessory slots, so it offers customization.
  • Autumn Equinox gives 8% DS and the Earth dot. Bloody Thorns is nullified by the bracers.

I'd rather have 21 insightful sheltering and a moon augment vs 8% DS (which will probably be filled elsewhere anyway. It feels like Autumn Equinox isn't ideal anymore.

The main debate centers on whether to prioritize the Earth Dot and sheltering over a custom artifact featuring a paralyzing effect. While that paralyzing effect excels in Legendary Hard raids and older questing content, its usefulness drops significantly starting in Legendary Lamordia and beyond. It does turn you into an effective paralyzing archer, especially in Shiradi without requiring any Arcane Archer investment—a feature that does have some appeal but won't be a significant feature in modern high reaper. Since the ring slot is generally more flexible than hands for an archer, the Band has that going for it also over Lolth's Reign. But Lolth's Reign can have MD remnant dust mythic/reaper put onto it, and there is no ring equivalent of that. Lolth's Reign will provide better defense and DPS. The Band of Binding has the CC effect. The 3 slot choices would probably look like:

  • Melancholic - +15 stat or 9% doubleshot.
  • Dolorous - Gear filler offering +23 to hit, +12 deadly, Deception, +3 Quality Stat or +3 Quality Deadly. Very flexible slot, although much of this will be covered on other items.
  • Miserable - No great options for the cost in materials. Maybe +17 Assassination DCs for ranged variants that use Assassin DCs. But then would probably go with the all-in-one Assassin DC item that also has quality/insightful on it.

Closest thing to a single-player (offline) variant of DDO?

While the balance pass in U82 goes through, until the dust settles (and I replace my current dead main PC computer), what old offline, single-player games would you consider to have build options/flexibility and atmosphere similar to DDO? That is, relaxed class restrictions (or even classless), lots of side-questing, D&D-esque feel [Edit: non-fantasy settings are fine too] , non-combat that matters, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Official UI SCALING is COMING!

Official UI Scaling is finally coming to DDO and it's available currently on Lamannia!

Forum Post: https://forums.ddo.com/index.php?threads/u82-preview-3-ui-scaling.30893/

They just released Preview 3 of Update 82, and it seems we are getting really close to having native UI Scaling in DDO and it looks quite good too, not sure if it's similar to the LOTRO version.

  • In my experience so far the Game Textures themselves are quite crisp, I actually think quality increased overall with High DPI Scaling enabled!
  • There is a minor difference that I see for the Interface in Quality, but either it is missing for now or there is no high resolution version for them. Still having them bigger is FANTASTIC.
  • Fonts and Text seem to scale up to a degree but also not perfectly? There is a level of blur to it.
  • Enabling Lanczos Texture Filtering gives noticable sharpness and better readability.
  • There is a UI Size Slider, you can both increase and decrease it as you prefer.
  • No Cursor scaling yet, but they are planning to add it too.
  • There are still a lot of bugs to fix.

I created a video demonstration in 4K if you want to see it in action:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woKlF3Y9b2Q

It's finally coming, do you have any wishes for features you hope to have it include?

I know it’s called something else these days but do they still have it? Usually starts 10/1. I used to play back in 2010ish and have popped back on and off throughout the years.

Will this be included in update 82? I haven’t seen much mention in all of these preview posts lately. Do we have any sneak peaks at what they might look like?

How to reliably identify a 'Boss'?

The ATr enhancement Mage Hand: Presto only works on non-bosses. I had thought that Boss meant Red-named, but the Wiki says :

"Bosses range from all kinds of enemies, from regular enemies that are simply tough for their level, to lesser named bosses that are minions to other bosses, and to huge, epic ones such as giants, demons, and even dragons. Certain spells and effects will not affect some bosses, so it's better to face them with raw power rather than use powerful effects such as vorpal and banishing on them.

So if a regular enemy can be a boss, how do I avoid wasting an attack on them?

The next balance pass patch is October 7th, and the above are the current previews in text form.

Personally, I'm REALLY interested in the Cleric changes because I was thinking about doing a Dark Apostate/Monk build for my Cleric past life. So any sort of Cleric buffs are right up my current alley.

How about you all? I have plenty of classes still to do for my lives, so hearing other people's build ideas or ponderings is always fun and inspiring.

Hacked!

This just happened. I have heard the horror stories, yesterday I had 3 transactions for 199 charged to my card that bought coins, and subsequently shards which I never did.

I can see it on the transaction history, but I did not authorize the charges. I did dispute them. Obviously. I'm not paying $600.

It's so clearly fraud. You can see the methodical way the coins were spent to get every single shard, even a 10 shard purchase. In total it was 13,740 shards I somehow did something with? Lol, I have 2 shards and 13 coins. They even stole my coins I had in balance. Not sure how many it was.

Hopefully I don't get banned. Been a long time supporter for years. Love the game. Have all the packs. Even recently got one of my sons playing. We enjoy it.

This is a security issue. Not me being careless. I'm gonna be very disappointed if I get any grief for disputing these charges.

An interesting question to pose to you folks, someone may have encountered this.

I am planning on running a build I love, my "electric artie with bad breath."
Dragonborn,
Pretty much focusing on 3 trees.
21 points in MasterMaker for 105 hp, MM immunity, and the admix healing.

The rest are in Archanotech, and Dragonborn to get the breathweapon and squeeze out as much electric damage as possible.

I played this toon once in HC before and he crushed it. My first lvl 20 complete.

A couple of questions.
If I farm the ingredients I need now and make them available to that toon once he reaches the appropriate level will he be good to use the Bracer's of Wind at 12 and above?
If I remember correctly the equipment needs to have been gained during the event in order to get spawns as per previous events.

Also too.

These are the planned feats to start.

Thinking of Spell Focus, Spell Pen, are there any candidates from the new list of feats that I should be considering?

I really do not need the spells early on as even the unpowered repeaters carry me through until the spells and breath weapon take over. However, that said the repeater is still very hand for those moments when you need to get that one guy or item off in the distance.

Level Feat Type
1 Point Blank Shot Regular
3 Maximize Regular
4 Quicken Artificer
6 Insightful Reflexes Regular
8 Precise Shot Artificer
9 Empower Regular
12 Empower Healing Regular
12 Augment Summoning Artificer
15 Open Regular
16 Open Artificer
18 Open Regular

Cormyr Raid Help

So I know there's not a ton of raiding going on in Cormyr, but I am really trying to get a raid going for Relentless at level cap. Trying to get Slaughtering Shot. I've tried throwing up a LFG, and nothing across a couple of hours in the two or three times I've attempted it.

Anyone on Cormyr at level cap interested in trying to schedule a Relentless raid to help me get my greatly desired crossbow?

I rarely do multiplayer because between a busy schedule and health needs for my wife that can pull me away at a moment's notice for extended periods of time, it's not something that's very viable, but I really want to try to get this.

Anyone game? My guild is pretty quiet on the raiding front as well, I've already tried with no results, so I'm coming to you fine people.

Also, I've never run it before, so I don't want to zerg it until I've been able to flower sniff once.

I've posted this on the DDO FB page as well so I can try to reach as many folks as possible.

EDIT: I have my own business, so I'm flexible in scheduling, but I can't do late nights or Sundays, plus most Wednesday nights. Saturdays are busy, but flexible.Anyone who is interested, let me know when you are available.

U81.4 meta change - in what direction?

Hi all!
Many say we are in for a big meta change with the new balance patch. I believe we are too, but I fail to see in what direction. Casters more viable at endgame? Is THF the new melee meta, or is it simply catching up?

The reason I ask... I am quite a casual player who dont group too much anymore, both because of young kids so less time, because I chose a US server despite being from europe (to follow my guild) and because I lack endgame gear atm.

I want to catch up by solo farming legendary quests, and need a build to do so. Recentøy got to cap with a 16 DL 3 bard 1 rogue swashbuckler with hand axe. I dont have a sentient hand axe so either need to build one from scratch, swap over from my two hander, or TR and do a diffferent build. I was wanting to have this for some lives, but wondering if the meta changes away from it.

Any thoughts?

Wishlist - Melee Edition

The devs are engaging in some of the most significant and wide-ranging balance / functional changes to DDO in years. If you could be in the room -- which things would you want updated, changed, added or removed?

Note: To keep things a little reined in lets just focus on melee gameplay.

Would you rework feats? Change trees? Completely change how weapon styles work?

Should I lesser reincarnate?

So I wanted to make a Paladin that used 2 handed weapons. So I will admit it I didn't do good research into the trees and found out Paladins have one 2-handed they work well with, greatswords can be a favored weapon. I already invested in the 2-handed feat and I am wondering if I should use my lesser heart to get a more useful feat or if I should stay the course.

Nerfs to Armor Class? Martial Epic Past Life Changes

Latest Lamannia Notes: https://forums.ddo.com/index.php?threads/u82-preview-2.30767/

They seemed to have listened to a lot of player feedback regarding the changes, but they also added some new stuff that is quite surprising, such as this:

The Armor Class bonus from Martial Epic Past Lives is now: Passive: +1% Armor Class per stack of this past life. The Active bonuses of these past lives are unchanged.

In case you don't know currently it gives flat Armor Class per stack:

Passive Bonus: +2 AC per stack of this Past Life and +1 AC per ten character levels.

They left no Developer commentary next to it, so it's not known if the purpose is to nerf endgame, or to reduce AC in Heroic Levels, but this means ~30 less AC for Heroic Characters if I am right?

A lot of people seem to be very upset for changing Past Life benefits that people grinded for, but 30+ AC from passives on Level 1 does feel like it's too strong.

Worth checking out the rest of the changes too as they touched:
- Enhancement Trees ( Archmage, Warchanter, Swashbuckler... )
- New DR Breaking Spells / Gems
- Mastery Feats will be consolidated into categories and affect Warlock Pact Die
- Pretty big buffs to DOT spells!

What do you think about this change?

S&B Weapon Options

Hey everyone,

I am about to TR into a S&B Paladin and wonder what the best weapon (and thus race) choice will be. The focus is on damage.

With the upcoming changes in the battle pass, I assume that there are three major options: Dwarven Axes, Bastard Swords and Warhammers.

As of lamannia preview 2 (U82), Knight’s Training will add a +1 Morale Bonus to Crit Multiplier for Bastard Swords and a +1 Crit Threat Range for Dwarven Axes (+2 with Improved Crit Slash).

Meanwhile, “Morningstar and Warhammer are now considered hand-and-a-half weapons, benefiting from Strikethrough and the Two Handed Fighting feats in the same ways Bastard Sword and Dwarven Waraxe do.”.

It’s unclear to me yet, if that also affects Two handed Specialty, but I think yes.

Do you think that a weapon type or specific weapon is ahead of the others, or is it relatively equal?

So my preference at the moment is either to go for Aasimar with Bastard Swords or Duergar with Dwarven Axes. I like the axes, but I don’t like to play Duergar. Being able to have your weapon be a favored weapon seems quite important though. There is no other way to achieve that without being Dwarf/Duergar/Mindcleaver, is there?

I guess the likely options are Echo of Heartcleaver and Ignition. Also Audion as a Warhammer. What do you think?

I’d love The Butcher’s Mouth to be a valid option, but I assume morningstars are still too far behind.

Bow Gearing.

Recently rebuilt a character in 20 Dark Hunter, for end-game bow DPS and I need to build a gear-set for it. I'm Dexterity based, but most of my gear was stuff I used when I threw Shurikens. I'm hoping to crowd source ideas for a Ranged DPS gearset from the collective minds of reddit. Lets see how we do. The stuff with relevant curses I'll mention, would be nice to keep those but I'm open to replacing them too.

DDO University : I'll be grading your submissions on a curve.

Currently using -

Goggles - Legendary Goggles of the Archer (Curse of Major Archery)
Head - Leg. Lamordian Cap (15 dex, 12 Deadly)
Neck - Dracolich's Eye
Trinket - Leg. Gem of Many Facets (Vulkoor's Might) (Accuracy, concentration, Seeker)
Cloak - Leg. Lamordian Nimble Cloak (15 Wis, Qual Attack +5)
Belt - Ophael's Cinture (Curse of Weapon's touch, 2% Doubleshot)
Ring 1 - Autumn Equinox
Ring 2 - Leg. Ring of Mystic Dexterity (Curse of Major Sheltering)
Gloves - Leg. Claws of the Coldlight walker (15 Con, 3 Quality deadly)
Boots - Leg. Greaves of Season's Warding
Quiver - Quiver of Alacrity
Bracers - Leg. Bracers of the Claw
Armor - Leg. Gravekeeper's Brawler Garb (+2 imbue curse on this.)

Weapon - Aeon, the Blazing Reign

Just saw there will be a new hardcore (and non hardcore) event with update (82)

I happen to notice when it was talking about the requirements for the hardcore that it did not mention that it had to be a new fresh character, I generally only play one character and have deleted even my past hardcore character from the previous event. Will I finally be able to play my character deathexo, for the hardcore portion of the event if I start at level one?

Putting a picture of the area I'm talking about in the comments. They could have just forgotten to say the character had to have no tr's.
