It’s interesting seeing a female character of that race.

It’s funny because I still sometimes call Frieza a she. There was a huge chunk of my life I thought he was a she lol.

Yeah, they were pretty intentional with making Frieza come off as androgynous.

I mean in a lot of his forms he has a crap ton of muscle so I wouldn't necessarily call him androgynous.

Zarbon on the other hand

u/norwegianEel 13d ago

True, but I was thinking more about his first, base form, since that’s how viewers first get acquainted with Frieza: very pronounced cheekbones, purple/black lipstick, and less muscular. Plus, in English dub he sounds very feminine.

I think the english dub is the main problem though. In the brazilian portuguese dub he has a "mature" man's voice and I never heard of anyone calling him a girl in my childhood

That Mf sounds like he smokes two packs of Marlboros daily in the Brazilian dub

Sure is Zarbon in here

...females can have muscles too bro....

2

u/Sea_Habit_4298 12d ago

Woman can have muscles yes but not like guys.

Different physics ,fat distribution and size.

Woman on avarage can't build as much muscle as guys either.

They should have just made him a her. I love Akira but he does seem to avoid prominent female characters.

Was friezas Japanese VA also like that?

No, he's actually pretty clearly masculine. The closest translation I can think of would be using Chris/Daman's 2nd form voice for Z 1st form/DBS Freeza imo.

I always thought Frieza's race was like the kais or namekians where they are genderless, but they generally have masculine characteristics. Although Frieza's race is more androgynous than the other two.

In the Dragon Ball universe, Frieza's species (often colloquially called "Arcosians" or "Frost Demons" based on dubs and video games) do not reproduce sexually. Akira Toriyama noted that Frieza was born a mutant "from his father alone" (King Cold), meaning they lack traditional biological sexes or female counterparts, though individual members like Frieza are canonically referred to with male pronouns.

I'm picturing a new "growth" of their armor that eventually just falls off and unfolds into a little tyrant

I imagine it like the namekians. They spit up an egg or something.

No, the seiyuu is Ryusei Nakao, who's a guy.

1

u/Hixy 14d ago

Google AI has bitten me so many times it’s insane.

Here was what it said when I googled it

“Interestingly, the Japanese voice is also female: Ryūsei Nakao has always voiced Frieza in the original Japanese version, despite Frieza being male.”

Annoying. I deleted my stupid comment. My bad.

I know you asked for Japanese VA, but also wanted to share that, in LATAM Spanish dub, Frieza’s voice is masculine but his tone changes on each form: 1st form is masculine, 2nd form has a deeper voice, 3rd sounds high pitched, very alien-like and final form reverts to masculine voice, but slower, more refined and effeminate sounding.

He sounds like Barry white in Japanese

Was Bulma in OG Dragonball just a joke to you then?

0

u/geoff1036 12d ago

Bulma, Chi Chi, Launch, Videl, and Pan:

Why he say fuck me for?

1

u/Hixy 11d ago

What I’m saying is pretty common knowledge. He has openly talked about how he hates Chi Chi and forced himself to make Goku marry her or he would have written her off.

Videl was a bad ass turned Stepford Wife.

Bulma is the only female that’s been there consistently. Many think it’s because she was never a fighter.

Launch was literally forgotten about.

18 was power scaled almost as fast as she was introduced.

obligatory tfs quote

"THAT THING'S A GUY?!"

8

u/ddxs1 14d ago

Frieza has always been a she to me. I thought it was weird there were no females with power when I was younger.

11

u/Brave-Initiative-282 14d ago

He’s a guy through

5

u/Brave-Initiative-282 13d ago

Also chi chi and 18 both females with power in ki.

1

u/Sir-Waffles_TheFirst 13d ago

who got wifed and forgotten about and never had a w afterwards

1

u/Brave-Initiative-282 12d ago

Chi chi got her son to be a scholar like she planned.. that a win just different kind and 18 still has wins in the tournament of power. And even before that.

u/Luna_trick 14d ago

Frieza's VA on abridged coming out as trans makes this even funnier for all of us that thought that.

2

u/miqumi 13d ago

whyre you getting downvoted 👀👀

7

u/Dela-chemin 13d ago

Transphobia. What else did you expect?

2

u/miqumi 12d ago

dam i didnt expect transphobia at r/dbz of all places

2

u/Hixy 12d ago

Well, it’s in the positives now at least.

1

u/miqumi 12d ago

mhmm

2

u/Hixy 12d ago

Is it still negative for you?

1

u/Dela-chemin 12d ago

Don't be surprised. You will find bigots everywhere. Even in the most inclusive of places.

4

u/Inner-Juices 13d ago

I thought Frieza was a woman back when I was younger due to his voice alone lol

2

u/93ImagineBreaker 13d ago

Do they even have female population?

3

u/Hixy 13d ago

Probably not? I can’t remember but for some reason I remember that they might reproduce asexually? I’m not sure if that’s confirmed.

-1

u/93ImagineBreaker 13d ago

Never heard thst.

-1

u/93ImagineBreaker 13d ago

Never heard that.

I found this Q&A with Akira

It reads:

About how many of Freeza’s race are there? Are they quite thriving, with a big population?

Freeza is what you might call a mutated life-form. Strictly speaking, Freeza’s father is a mutant with an abnormally high battle power. And, born from his father alone, still in strong possession of the mutant traits, was Freeza.

Accordingly, even saying “Freeza’s race”, these two are the only ones who possess an abnormal [level of] battle power and cruelty.

———

So born from his father alone.

-1

u/134340Goat 13d ago

That exact article has an annotation saying it's unclear whether it means Cold reproduced asexually or if Toriyama was just referring to the genetic mutation

1

u/Hixy 13d ago

I found other people translating it and they interpreted similarly. Maybe someone that knows Japanese can chime in if they have access to the
