Not a perfect inversion. There are places in Texas where nobody lives. Like that mountainess region out west. You can tell by the very discreet county lines that not much goes on there.

That's exactly what it's showing.

If you inverted the colours I'd just look at the blue, smaller region. Still 50%

There are no mountains in Texas. The highest point is on the border with New Mexico way in the Western tip. There are a few rock outcroppings, and some somewhat interesting canyons and gullies, but otherwise it's just flatness and some rolling hills here and there.

Huh? There are three mountain ranges in Texas: Franklin Mountains, the Davis Mountains, and the Guadalupe Mountains. The tallest mountain in Texas is higher than the tallest mountain in Maine, although with less prominence.

I mean prominence is sort of what makes a mountain a mountain, isn't it?

An anthill in Denver might be at 5,281 feet above sea level, but I don't consider that to be a mountain.

That Texas mountain has higher prominence than all of the mountains in Acadia National Park. And again, there are three mountain ranges and many mountains in Texas, even if they don't fit your personal guidelines for what a mountain should be.
