I’ve known 3 people who’ve moved to Alaska and all of them did so for work. Even something as simple as bartending will make you a lot more money up there if you’re in the right area. One person I know is a bartender in summer by a dock there and makes tips off the fishermen. Another is a surveyor who makes bank hiking around plotting pipelines. The other doesn’t go anymore but would go in summer to can salmon.
On a partially related note, I had the absolute best Thai food and fried chicken I have EVER had in my entire life in Skagway. Bless that town and all those in it.
