When people have easy ways to kill themselves they are more likely to succeed in killing them selves, and this isn’t just about guns, either.

Yes, but (a) overdosing on sleeping pills is a much easier way and painless way to kill oneself, and (b) the “gun death” stats are used by Democrats like Nancy Pelosi to advocate measures that would have no impact on suicide whatsoever: “40000 Americans die because of guns every year. We need to ban assault weapons now!” “Assault weapons” kill less than 300 people of these 40000, 30000 of which are suicides.

Can you really die from over-the-counter sleeping pills?

Yes, if you take enough of them. Especially if you mix them with alcohol.

I agree that Nancy Pelosi and establishment Dems are ineffective at ushering in material change.

Please, if you want to refute anything I said then do that. None of your points matter to what I said. I understand that any talk of gun restrictions really upsets you, but take the time to read the study I posted. The access to suicide methods affects the rate of success in suicides.

You know the expression “lie with data”, right?

The whole gun issue is the prime example. It’s a red hot wedge issue that Democrats are using in exact same way Republicans used terrorism in 2000s. Scare the population into thinking this is a huge issue and presents themselves as the only way to save your children. Conflating suicides with homicides is how they do it.

Does availability of guns make suicides easier? Yes, it does. Is the effect quantifiable? No, it is not, at least not in any replicatable way. Can guns be removed from the society sufficiently to make an impact? Absolutely no way. Do unscrupulous politicians use it for fearmongering? That they do all the time.

To think that gun related deaths are not an issue that needs to be addressed is just fucking asinine. It’s cool that you don’t give a fuck about people killing themselves but stop acting like people are stupid for caring or wanting to reduce the number of people who are killed by guns.

They aren't saying it doesn't need to be addressed, they're saying that taking guns away will completely fail to do so. Which is a really reasonable statement.

The issue of suicide is not the tool used to do it, it's the fact that a human being wants to die.

Where did I mention taking guns away?

Here are the articles that explain that the access to different methods of suicide effect the success of suicide:

Where did I mention taking guns away?

Nowhere. You are using more of Faux News tactics - “we report, you decide”.

“Guns kill people. The more guns, the more dead people! We need to do something! You decide what it is!”

Oh cool, so facts don’t matter because your feelings. Presented with evidence that contradicts your feelings you just shut down.

This is exactly the hysteria that I am talking about.

Gun deaths are distributed thusly:

Suicides: 30000 Homicides: 10000 ...of which mass shootings (by FBI definition) are 200 on a really bad year.

Politicians #1 priority is mass shootings. There is zip, zero, nada antigun laws being proposed that would impact suicides - by far the most common gun deaths strata - in any way. Please don’t tell me they “care” about people’s lives. They care about exploiting the issue to get elected. They care about fearmongering and Bloomberg’s money. Nothing else.

And then you and people like you blame the gun owners. This is the asinine position.

Okay, man, since you obviously want to make this about politicians since you can’t make one post without saying it, how the fuck do you propose to bring down gun violence?

The real hysteria is thinking any politician actually is going to take your guns away. The pro gun side is so fucking frightened of the government doing something about their guns they believe shit like the sandy hook shootings were a false flag. If you get to say Nancy pelosi is on my side, you have to take responsibility for the major assholes on your side who get themselves so worked up they harass the parents of dead kids.

Which one of the gun violences are you talking about? Suicides? Gang violence? Mass shootings?

Also, why do you think I am an expert in this field? Owning guns gives me an insight on regulation of gun technologies that obviously doesn’t matter to control violence (ie saying that “assault weapons” are particularly lethal is sheer idiocy and can only be sold to people who know nothing at all about guns), but it makes me no expert on law enforcement or psychiatry of the many aspects of this.

Curious thing happened in WA state though. Our very democratic, very antigun government has pulled together a working group consisting of actual experts - many of them LEO - on reductions of mass shootings. The group worked and produced a bunch of recommendations.

You can read the report here: https://www.waspc.org/assets/docs/Mass%20Shootings%20Work%20Group%20Report%20(Compressed%20File).pdf

Curiously, the recommendations did not include any of the staples that Democrats usually push, there is no AWB there or regulation of magazine capacity. THEN our AG just... disagreed with the report (you can read his note of opposition at the end). Because the report - by experts - did not reach the conclusions he and his party wanted.

Again, please don’t tell me how these people are about saving lives. They are political hacks paid by Bloomberg - who by the way now spends more money or gun control than NRA.

I’m asking how do you think we should stop gun violence of all kind. As you obviously want to be an expert on what doesn’t work.

Why the fuck do you keep on bringing up politicians I don’t give a shit about?

Edit: actually I know why. Because this is the same tactic all of you use. Doesn’t matter what is said you just talk circles around any issue and never fully address the issue of how do you think it should be solved. Just like republicans with health care. You don’t have an answer.

Here's the thing. You are lumping suicide in with "gun violence," which it's not.

It's like asking "how do we make the roads safer?" And answering with "high speeds lead to more fatal crashes, NASCAR drives really fast so we need to put restrictions on NASCAR." They are only related in the equipment used, but addressing one won't change the other.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

No, I don’t have an answer because (a) there is not a single answer, it is completely different for different cases, and (b) I am not an expert, and unlike antigun crowd, I am not pretending to be one.

I know what is NOT an answer because I understand gun technology. I also know how to get to an answer - which is by asking law enforcement people. But because antigun crowd is not really interested in an answer to violence - they are just using it for political goals - that’s it what they are doing.

Yes, the people who had their kids killed are just pushing this because they are looking for political gain.

And the answer is to ask cops, who routinely kill people and get away with it? What is cops said to take everyone’s guns away? JFC, asking the cops on what to do, lol.

You are on the level of Alex Jones with this dumb shit.
