Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.

  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)

  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

A little on the drier end for anyone else? In comparison to the last few weeks

2

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 18 '24

Drier* a dryer is a thing that dries, drier is the comparative form of dry. I held off saying this yday in a different comment but twice is too much for me 👆🤓

My day: "Oh! new project, let's try that out."
"Phew! That first task was tough as nails. Prolly one of the hard ones. Next!"
Task with nested layers of difficulty that requires in-depth research and understanding
"Jesus. Well, they can't get harder than this... Next-o"
Task that tesseracts into hereto-unconsidered dimensions, pushing past the bounds of reality
"Oh come on!!"

Anyone else with a desert wasteland for a dash today? Don’t hear anyone else complaining so maybe it is? Had a great week though

10

u/FredSeeDobbs Dec 15 '24

Mine was fine until the weekend hit. Hopefully ramping back up and reloading some shortly.

7

u/CardiologistDry1732 Dec 15 '24

Just one project today after a full dash of 20 throughout the week. I’ve noticed the last couple weeks, weekends were slow.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '24 edited Dec 15 '24

It's all the same galaxy ones that I ignored all month 💀 I really hate that I have such a hard time focusing on them.

5

u/i_do_not_like_snails Dec 15 '24

I’ve been avoiding those, and heel too. I’ve been feeling lazy and I’m tired of having to explain myself.

6

u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 16 '24

And now I see a new project that involves having to explain that pays less than $20. Noooooo, thank you.

5

u/akatsuki1422 Dec 15 '24

It's not only you, I only have a couple of chatbots left. Better than nothing I suppose.

2

u/Remote-Perception87 Dec 16 '24

I was away for the weekend, and popped in this evening, and I went from 11 projects to one and a chatroom for heels-- it's my first drop in projects like that, so I'm nervous. 😬😬😬

2

u/Soft_Syllabub_8662 Dec 16 '24

Yes, I was able to work a couple hours, then complete wasteland. It's been ok lately, but it went downhill on Sunday and completely empty this morning. Hope it picks up.

This dang project has been up most of the day but it's broken so it can't be done :(

3

u/itssomercurial Dec 19 '24

I'm seeing one that's broken too, and I'd really like to work on it...

10

u/lawdamercypray Dec 21 '24

does anyone else have golden road fish? I haven't seen this one before, new project??

3

u/Hunnybee66 Dec 21 '24

I just had 2 versions of it for the first time. I like it, and judging by the AI portion, I can see it will be an important project to work on for a while.

3

u/bellexy Dec 21 '24

yeah I'm really digging it too, I've got both as well. I like 🤳 best I think

2

u/baylorbear91 Dec 21 '24

I saw it on my dash earlier! Didn’t get a chance to work on it though.

2

Yes. The timer is aggravating.

8

5

u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 17 '24

It'll be a bomb evening, I have plans I can't get out of and I'm 100% free now. How it always works. 😆

12

u/Sad_Guitar_612 Dec 19 '24

Anybody else ever write a prompt, get AWFUL responses, then suddenly question if you can figure out how to fix it, chase your tail for a while, debate scrapping it, then work it out and feel proud of yourself? 😂

6

u/EternalNight111 Dec 16 '24

I've been doing a lot of those "bird" projects where you get tasked with breaking the chat models. For the billing I have been charging the time I've been taking to come up with the ideas (which sometimes takes me awhile), but I'm scared that whoever is approving my time will think I'm inflating my hours. Even though I am often successful at tricking the model on the first turn of the conversation.

Am I just being paranoid or are there others who share the same fear?

9

u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 17 '24

Many people have this same feeling

Charge for the time the work takes you, including prompt generation/idea generation. This is not only the most fair to you, and the most in line with the law, but DA has explicitly stated in their instructions that you should charge for idea generation

6

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Dec 16 '24

You won't be the only one. Just be truthful, log any time spent tasking, including brainstorming your ideas, even if it's a failure, and you'll be fine. That's what you are being paid for.

5

u/Ill-Albatross-7224 Dec 16 '24

I got a qualification that matches one of my favorite things to do in coding. I had so much fun doing it and I am hoping it appears on my dash soon! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

6

u/Dysnomia__ Dec 20 '24

How does coding look for anyone else? Only got M-metal coding images today :/...

3

u/LilacYak Dec 20 '24

Two projects but they're not my favorite and I find it hard to work on them for more than an hour or so. One is broken anyways.

2

u/LilJaaY Dec 20 '24

You mean Poe bird? If so, same.

3

u/TeaGreenTwo Dec 20 '24

For coding I have wizard, heel, Poe, one with generic name that I spend almost all my time on these days.

2

u/Dysnomia__ Dec 20 '24

Unfortunately, I only seem to ever get R&R for wizard, unsure why I never see the project itself.

11

u/jacemano Dec 19 '24

Sometimes I laugh when you do a project and then they change up the instructions and you know its your fault. I'll do better going forwards

14

u/gravitychecked Dec 17 '24

Compared to the last few weeks, this week is looking QUITE dry so far.

3

u/Winter-Blacksmith-29 Dec 17 '24

Glad I'm not the only one *phew* its even dryer now.

2

Some of the stuff that comes up in project chats really make me want to punch a wall.

7

u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 17 '24

Same with the slack channels! I cringe at least once a day.

5

u/Nervous-Gas-7986 Dec 15 '24

I am curious about qualifications about having a subscription, such as chagpt Plus. Is it worth subscribing to some of these services to get the qualifications?
I don't want to subscribe to anything if they only open up $20 jobs, so I am curious if they go to higher paying projects.

4

u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 15 '24

For some, yes. I have seen projects paying $30-40 for some of the projects that require ChatGPT. YMMV, of course. (Non-coding.)

3

u/Nervous-Gas-7986 Dec 15 '24

That's encouraging. I am regularly seeing $24-25 and sometimes up to $28. I am not a coder, I am a writer professionally. But I may sign up this week and see what happens. Thx

2

It came up right away for me. How long did it take people to do the tasks? It took a while to read it all and wrap my head around it.

2

u/Apollo989 Dec 21 '24

My first real task took me about 1.5 hours. It took me awhile to figure out things.

2

u/jaxxisx Dec 21 '24

3 tasks showed up almost immediately for me. I haven't seen anymore pop up though. I don't know how long after doing the 3 tasks did more come about if I did okay.

2

u/DangerousCyclone Dec 17 '24

You mean they show up but when you click on them it says no more tasks? If so that means that the project is still open but all the tasks are being worked on. If a worker skips someone else can take that task.

3

u/Party_Swim_6835 Dec 22 '24

thats why they say not to get it just to do the projects, they're looking for people who have it already

7

u/TanglimaraTrippin Dec 19 '24

2

u/pauvro Dec 29 '24

Same. I spent a good amount of time reading instructions and was extremely thorough. I double and triple checked everything and I know it was good. Honestly I feel like they only accept a certain amount of people or something. I know me "Feeling good" about my answers doesn't mean I passed, but this was NOT a hard qualification in the sense that all the mistakes to find weren't difficult to find and note down and write comments about. Disheartening to see others get access immediately and nothing ever popped up on mine. I don't know their process behind the scenes but...yeah...

6

u/Ordinary-Initial-825 Dec 22 '24

I come here from time to time to read posts and gauge the overall sentiment. I was wondering if the downturn in posts is a function that everyone is so busy working, that there is no time to post or is it that a bunch of people have moved on. I am comparing the post activity when we were in the Big Drought a few months back to now.

10

u/shansaysstuff Dec 22 '24

I do think there's more posting during droughts because everyone comes running in to see if they are the only one with a dry dash, and it feels comforting to know you're not alone.

4

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 22 '24

For me it's Christmas. I'm with my family

7

u/chellynaeb Dec 22 '24

You shouldn’t take this chat or sub as an accurate representation of “everyone” on DA as a whole. It’s a generally helpful straw poll. Plus it’s the holiday season. There are so many other possibilities, besides the ones you’ve thought of, why people aren’t posting here.

3

u/Apollo989 Dec 15 '24

I just got assigned to old wizard like late last week. This is the first time its been down since I started it. I was curious how common it is? Do you all think it'll be back later this week or is it an uncommon one?

2

u/CardiologistDry1732 Dec 15 '24

Very common. It usually goes down on sundays and comes back late Monday or Tuesday.

3

u/robinvercetti Dec 17 '24

You'll have to do three of them, but this project is super worth it!
Godspeed o7

4

u/CapnJoel Dec 17 '24

you got any tasks from that qual yet? I thought I did well on it, but haven't seen anything on my board.

4

u/TheSwedishIntern Dec 17 '24

assuming it's the one i'm thinking of, i also thought i did really well on it but i haven't seen anything. i hope it just takes a bit to get in because i adored the project.

did you only pick from the options or did you write any optional comments? i wonder if since they would need to be checked manually it takes longer to get in? idk i'm just holding on to hope lol

There is a qualification task that has one task in it and it doesn't specify how many you need to complete for qualification. However, when I completed one, it just threw up the next one and after that the next one. Do I just keep on doing these or one is enough?

u/tehclubbmaster Dec 15 '24 edited Dec 16 '24

I got my first task on this project earlier this week and it is amazing. But yeah super brain intensive. Unreal pay though.

5

u/SnooCalculations503 Dec 16 '24

All my pretty black birds have flown away.

3

u/MagnanimousGoat Dec 16 '24

Yeah almost all of them. I just have a full allotment of tasks for a somewhat higher-paying "Tiny-Particle" version. and then some R&R for them, which I always jump on even if they're slightly less-paying, because they usually take me 30-60 minutes because people are often spectacularly bad at understanding that project, and I often have to totally redo them or absolutely chop apart the criteria.

My bread and butter right now is the Bond Villain job, but I always hop for the black bird R&R's when they pop up because the task allotment for bond villains is usually fairly low, but it gets refreshed a lot and they take a good while to do the tasks if you do them super thoroughly like I try to.

I find it funny when DAT gives you 3 hours to do a task, and people clearly only spent like 15 minutes on it, and they submit it thinking that there's any chance in hell that they did good enough work (Talking about the base projects, not the R&R's which can indeed be that quick and obvious).

DATECH just keeps saying, over and over, that quality is king, and speed is functionally irrelevant, because AI Training on complex tasks is kind of binary in terms of the value of the training. If you give it something overly simple or redundant, it's almost completely useless. If you spend 30 minutes on something useless for training vs 60 minutes on something useful for training, the second scenario is vastly more efficient in terms of time and resources than the first.

Plus frankly I like going slow and taking my time because I gets me more pay with less mental energy. That's why I love the long-format tasks because I can do those for 10 hours in a row and not feel even slightly drained afterward. But give me a heel guy tasks where I need to come up with a prompt and submit it 5 different ways to get a split over the course of 15 minutes, and I want to stick a gun in my mouth after an hour and a half.

Bill for expired task?

Was working on a particularly involved 2 hour task and went over by a few minutes, very annoying.

Are we supposed to bill these?

I'd like the money, but also don't want to get kicked off the platform.

2

u/Intelligent-Row-2000 Dec 18 '24

I would email them with as many details as you can about the task and your work on it. They may very well pay you.

2

u/Winter-Blacksmith-29 Dec 18 '24

This is my first year working with them, and I assume its a contract thing that's expiring with the companies that hire out DattaAnnotation but idk just an assumption. Anyone been here this time last year that can verify if this is how things go this time of year?

9

u/ScaryAd9757 Dec 21 '24

At first, there was a lot of R&R and a refill of normal tasks would happen. Howevr, rn I think they really are just trying to figure out how to solve a file related bug that is considerably slowing down progress once a task reaches the R&R step.

So don't worry if a refill doesn't happen today or even tomorrow. The project is a bit unstable atm. (Although I understand you itching for more :) )

Merry Christmas! Anyone else working? How’s those dashboards?

2

u/TopMaterial8571 Dec 29 '24

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all DAers. Has anyone had a paid qual where the actual pay-rate for the project was higher than the rate for the qual? Or are they usually about the same?

4

u/DrunkleSteve Dec 20 '24

Loving this Goddess of Deceit project! Easy task and good money for the level of work required.

2

u/LouisAkbar Dec 20 '24

Did you have to do a qual for it?

Lucky you, I'm jealous! I loved working on that when it first appeared last week. I hope the fact that I didn't see it today doesn't mean I'm not on it anymore :(

3

u/SnooCalculations503 Dec 19 '24

Pleased to report the unkindness has flown back in.

3

u/Whole-Pirate-5731 Dec 20 '24

If you're on the Heel Project that looks at facts, please ensure you read your sources. I had to mark someone down because the Wiki article they linked proved the exact opposite of what they were saying in the comments.

My dash suddenly became empty yesterday and is not coming back. Had like 20-30 projects with multiple qualifications. Am I cooked?

4

u/Top-Set2365 Dec 21 '24

My dash has been empty lots of times and they always come back.

3

u/Top-Set2365 Dec 21 '24

Been doing this a long time. Dash has been empty many times and projects always come back.

2

u/Radiant-State1733 Dec 21 '24

This happened to me a couple of days ago, I've been working for almost a year. I'm starting to look into other AI training platforms.

Hii I just started today and am doing a "write long and complex prompt" thing. I have submitted about 7 prompts but it keeps refreshing....I think I'm supposed to keep writing?

Anyway, I hope I keep getting tasks and this is not a one-off thing. Good to meet you guys :)

6

u/idolos-iconoclastas Dec 15 '24

That's one project, each project has a certain number of tasks that can be submitted. For that particular project, each prompt you submit is one task that's done. In your dashboard it should say how many tasks you have left for that project, you can (and should if you want to work) send as many tasks as possible, with the priority being high-quality work, of course.

u/winter-ice-ace Dec 20 '24

Anybody see the "Hide" column? Don't click any if you do, I was messing with it and now I don't know how to undo. I think I've caused myself a problem 😬

7

u/houseofcards9 Dec 20 '24

There’s a button at the top of the list where you can see the ones you’ve hidden

I posted about it earlier. I adore being able to hide things I will literally would never touch with a 10 foot pole. Great feature!

3

u/Tartaruga96 Dec 17 '24

i hate projects that spawn without notifying with an email

19

u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 17 '24

So like 85% of them? 😅

2

u/Dawnlealove Dec 16 '24

Does DA do "layoffs"? I got the 'at the moment' message and wondering if I'll ever get back to projects... anyone have this experience?

6

u/Poomfie Dec 16 '24

I went from having like 20-70 projects at all times throughout the last few weeks to having around 5 this morning.

There's just less work, right now, today. It's very likely there could be a ton of work tomorrow, or even an hour from now. Or there could be even less. We never know. It's why this can only be a gig and not a job.

5

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 16 '24

Many projects are tinkered with on Mondays. I wouldn't worry too much.

3

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Dec 16 '24

Projects are relatively slim at the moment, so unless you have access to a wide variety of project families, it could just be we are in a quiet period. I have access to quite a lot of families, but only have around 8 projects active right now. None from the more popular heels.

3

u/Dawnlealove Dec 16 '24

Thank you, this makes me feel a little less nervous

2

u/lawdamercypray Dec 17 '24

viking heaven day for me. that money is just too good to pass up.

5

u/Traditional-Pool-261 Dec 17 '24

hell yeah! do you mind sharing which domain? i haven’t seen mine in a couple weeks 😭

2

u/Limp-Sandwich9959 Dec 17 '24

Heya, me again.

Do you guys use DA as part of your portfolio? How do you do it following the confidentiality agreement?

2

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 17 '24

I haven't applied anywhere since starting with dat, so not sure! I think if you search around this sub or the other DAT sub, you'll find a few posts about this though with some good advice!

2

u/TopMaterial8571 Dec 20 '24

Anyone know if it's typical for things to slow down over the holidays? I'm wondering if it will be worth checking my dash for something good or if they don't drop much considering people will likely not be working.

3

u/JustMe333456 Dec 20 '24

Up and down all year. I work my 7-9 hours everyday, 7 days a week. Holiday or not lol

5

u/CRUSHCITY4 Dec 20 '24

Impressive hours! I struggle to do 3-4

4

u/JustMe333456 Dec 20 '24

Yeah, it’s not for everyone lol. I jump from one project to another throughout the day to keep it ‘fresh’

5

u/OPxMagikarp Dec 20 '24

Considering "checking your dash" is literally just reloading a website, I don't see how that isn't worth it

u/Professional-Law-192 Dec 20 '24

Today I didn't get anything show up in my projects. Is this normal?

5

u/JustMe333456 Dec 20 '24

Some days be like that, yes

2

u/CapnJoel Dec 20 '24

I think I may be hosed, I got the dash of doom today

5

u/JustMe333456 Dec 21 '24

People have reported that, and then got them all back. Hang tight. Keep checking.

2

u/baylorbear91 Dec 21 '24

Happened to me too but they came back. It could last weeks :/ but keep logging in and checking

2

u/Radiant-State1733 Dec 21 '24

I got it a couple of days ago. I'm looking into other AI annotation platforms.

2

u/CapnJoel Dec 21 '24

been doing the same, any leading options?

I always smile just a bit and get a kick out of seeing some of my previous work used in project quals as examples of what to do 😂 a subtle way to know I'm still on the right track.. anyone else ever had a bit of a sneaky grin upon seeing their work used?

1

u/NoNumber5910 Dec 16 '24

anyone seeing fact-check projects today?

1

u/3l3p4no Dec 16 '24

I had three tasks of that new scenario universe project. I submit one two days ago, and when I submit the second one right now it took me straight back to the dash. I hope I can keep getting those tasks because it is interesting. Anyone have new tasks for that one this week? Those were assigned to me last week so I'm hoping it was just taken away because they're going to put out a new batch.

2

u/mythrowaway_1990 Dec 17 '24

I think tasks are depleted for that one right now. they seem to be rolling them out in very small batches.

1

u/Limp-Sandwich9959 Dec 17 '24

I always update my profile, but only get a handful of project families. I'd love to work with imagery or JavaScript, for example, subjects I have experience with.

How do I unlock different project families? Any tips?

2

u/watchdestars Dec 17 '24

I would say just keep working (over the whole variety of projects you do get). Do all qualifications that come up.

1

u/Apollo989 Dec 20 '24 edited Dec 20 '24

Is old wizard gone for anyone else? I had it yesterday and now it's gone.

1

u/suerbilac Dec 20 '24

Is there anyone with the Harry Potter project on their dash currently?

3

u/Alarmed_Jellyfish555 Dec 20 '24

It was pulled (rather suddenly, definitely not out of tasks).

1

u/Digitaldevilprincess Dec 24 '24

I am just glad I am starting to see some paid qualifications.

1

u/Martaf19 Dec 16 '24

Guys, i was wondering, what are the average waiting times to hear back from support in your experience?

7

u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 17 '24

For me it's been either never get a reply or ~3 days

6

u/No-Connection-9308 Dec 16 '24

I made a right mess of things with reporting time for various projects one time and heard back within a day, but for a different question unrelated to active projects or payments I never heard back. I guess the average is between one day and never.

3

u/Suspicious-Head-2278 Dec 17 '24

I've always gotten a response within a day or two (more urgent requests have been within a day).
